Lisa A. Ryan, Language Arts and Reading Instructional Specialist

About me…

I am entering my 23rd year at Hillcrest as Instructional Specialist and am very excited to be part of the challenging, thoughtful work ahead of us for this year!

Together, we will learn more about ourselves, others, and the world around us through our exploration of literature and writing. I am dedicated to providing an environment which encourages a love of literature, independence, natural curiosity, and empathy.

As Hillcrest’s Language Arts and Reading Instructional Specialist, I work with students in grades 6- 8. I am eager to continue this work with students in a variety of settings: enrichment, support and intervention, coaching, co-teaching, and parallel instruction. It is a pleasure to work closely with the integrated language arts, language arts, and reading teachers, as well as the teachers of all content areas as we develop literacy skills across the disciplines. This year, I have the special pleasure of teaching two sections of Grade 7 IL: Reading during period four.

After the last bell sounds for the school day, I am the moderator of the Young Authors Club on Monday afternoons and co-moderator of the Hillcrest Football Fan Club on Thursday afternoons. I am open to club ideas and leave Wednesday afternoons free for trying out new ideas. (Suggestions welcome!) I am also available for extra help on Wednesday afternoons.

Before coming to Hillcrest, I taught in New York City, Fairfield, and Bridgeport. I have B.S. and graduate degrees in secondary education(7-12), English, biology and am also certified in elementary education. I have recently completed a graduate program in Applied Storytelling and hope to bring this to classroom and community venues. I have been involved in studies at the Lincoln Center and Yale regarding arts integration and am a member of the Yale University Art Gallery Teacher Leadership Group. I am an avid fan of the theater and am a volunteer at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, CT.

In my free time, I enjoy music, reading, painting, walking and hiking, collecting rocks, watching football (Go Steelers!), and coffee roasting and brewing. I am also a dog lover and have a quirky but very lovable French Bulldog. I enjoy being the mother of three sons (small- medium- and large) and love spending time with my family.
