What is Jazz Band? HMS Jazz Band is a select audition group that meets after school on Wednesdays throughout the school year. Students must play a band instrument, guitar, bass, strings or a percussion/drum set and should be in the end of the red Standard of Excellence book example 100 or higher. We take in a variety of instruments as you can imagine and this is a fun group for you to encounter new jazz, jazz rock, pop and other styles of band music in a smaller ensemble format. We play at a high level and feature jazz history, improvisation, learning the pentatonic and other scales as well as have fun with a unique grouping of instruments to a common goal.
Are there auditions? For past members of the group it is not necessary but new members can see Mr. Holmgren for audition materials specific to their instrument. Any grade student is eligible to play in jazz as long as they have completed past #100 in the Standard of Excellence Red Book. Auditions will take place on 9/18, 9/20, and 9/21 as needed and signups will be on a sheet in D6.
When do we meet? - Every Wednesday after school from 2:30 to 3:15 in room D6 with Mr. Holmgren.
What if I have to miss a rehearsal? – Regular attendance is expected for a group like this and although an occasional absence is understandable, if you miss more than 3 in a given concert season you may not be able to continue in the group. Missing parts during a rehearsal makes growth and development as an ensemble difficult so regular attendance is expected.
What are our performance opportunities? – We perform in the Spring Concert (5/1/26) at Trumbull High School as well as the Daniels Farm Celebration of the Arts TBA in March or May 2026.
