"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers." - Charles W. Eliot
Independent Reading Overview
Independent reading is an important part of our class. Each Friday (40 mins.) you will have independent reading time as well as other times of the week. You are accountable for using this time wisely. Please read the notes below.
Rationale: Research shows that young adults are not reading for many reasons (i.e. technology, social media, etc.). As a result, many young adults are reading below their reading level. This is a problem! So, by providing choice (any book that you want), time (every Friday in class), and easy assessment (one paragraph journal reflection in your Reading Journal), we hope to create a love for reading in our students!
Expectation: All students are required to read one grade-level appropriate book every marking period.
YOU will be able to choose your book, but it must be approved by the teacher. Keep a log of your reading in your independent reading notebook. Bring your book to class every day! Although the majority of our independent reading will be done on Friday's, there will be other times throughout the week that we may read so please make sure that you have your book.
Assignment
Each week, you will be required to respond to the literature. I will provide you with suggested prompts to help you with this. All weekly assignments should be approximately one (1) paragraph in length and must be completed in your Reading Journals. Please make sure you date your journal entries. You are responsible for showing your best effort on these assignments. Be neat! Your Journals will be turned in at the end of each Marking Period for a Quiz/Test grade.
