2nd Grade

Last Music Assignment This Year....

May 11-15: This is your last music assignment at our school as a 2nd grader but don't you worry, don't be sad. I have some news that will make you glad. I am one lucky teacher... Why???? Because I get to see you next year even more when you move "upstairs" as a 3rd grader - whoop whoop! Do a happy dance..... Let's celebrate together with your last assignment...are you ready? I made you three "Freeze" Dances. You have to do at least one but can always do more..... I would love to see a silly photo of you as you "freeze" if you want to send it to me.

Choice Board distance learning assignments for music classes at Christ the King School.

May 4-May 8: Play the Simon Music Game piano version online AND/OR do at least one of the following dances… Poppin’ Bubbles, Boom Chicka Boom, Dynamite.

April 27-May 1: Find a long scarf, piece of yarn, or shoelace. Arrange it on the floor in different shapes and patterns: circle, wavy, zig zag, etc. Follow the line you’ve made with your finger and your voice on the vowel “Ooh”. Use your high and low voice, like Dory in “Finding Dory”. Try at least 3 different patterns or shapes with your piece. Visit this website to practice high/low sounds on the "Roller Coaster." AND/OR complete at least one task card deck in Boom learning

April 20-24: Log into your Boom Learning account and put your ears “to the test.” Play the pirate themed task card deck about Musical Opposites (High/Low). Remember you can play more than once to earn more coins with your knowledge….

April 6-10: In music we use the word pitch when we talk about how high or low sounds are. Choose at least 2 songs we have learned to sing in class. Then practice singing each song by yourself in a higher (not louder) pitched voice and then in a lower pitched voice. You can even sing some of those songs with me by playing the videos below. OR Watch this video where Bill Nye the Science Guy tells you all about pitch and what it looks like on an oscilloscope. OR Log into your Boom Learning account and put your ears “to the test.” Play the pirate themed task card deck about Musical Opposites (High/Low). Remember you can play more than once to earn more coins with your knowledge….

March 15-April 3: Students in 2nd grade were given color by code worksheets. These are basically a color by number/symbol style worksheet to demonstrate their mastery of some of our most recent material/skills used in music class. In addition to the worksheets (which are due April 6th) students should always look at and complete the digital task cards in Boom Learning.

Boom cards are digital task cards used to help a student a)review material and/or b)assess a student's knowledge. They are an engaging and fun activity for students and while you as a parent may think they are playing a game, they truly are learning. Students earn "coins" for their skill/knowledge being assessed in a deck. When a student has earned 750 "coins" he/she can "buy" (with their knowledge - not your hard-earned money) a mystery avatar. Students like to compete with one another to see who can earn all the mystery avatar first. In addition to to "coins" students also earn lightening bolts for how fast/slow they remember/choose the correct answer. Students in grades 3-8 should already know their username/password (these should be attached to either their folder or their assignment planner) but can always email me if they have forgotten it or lost it. Click here to be taken to the Boom Learning site.

Frozen Tozen

This video explains how students "play" the decks called Frozen Tozen. Students work on their listening skills, identifying long and short sounds and depending on which deck, learn to recognize where the silent beat (rest) is. This is a form of rhythm dictation with multiple levels.

Online Learning & Games

This is an online music game that features the Music Flute opera music by Mozart. It teaches students about musical instruments. The screen shows a stage with orchestral instruments below. Students listen to the sound of an instrument playing and select the picture if an instrument they think is being played. When they guess the right answer, a cartoon animal appears on the stage playing that instrument. All sections of the orchestra are represented here, as well as piano and harpsichord. This is a fun game with entertaining graphics and a well-designed user interface. Students are sure to enjoy guessing the names of the instruments and seeing the cartoon musicians. Click here to play.

Composers - Students can click here and choose a composer to learn about. Composers are organized by time period. They can even listen to some music by the composer.

Instruments - Students can click here to learn about the instruments and their families in the orchestra. By clicking on the name of an instrument students can learn more about it, i.e. what is made from and how sound is produced. They can even listen to a short musical excerpt. The harp is gorgeous!

Make Your Own Instrument - Students can choose from list of instruments and learn how to make one.

A variety of games are on this site, including learning about musical terms, reading notes on the treble clef, match the rhythm, interactive composer timeline, compose your own music, exploring the orchestra and more.

In Music Match Instruments (an aural memory game) students flip over a card and listen to music. Each card has another match playing the same music. Students may need to click to accept Adobe Flash for the site to play.

In Music Match Composers (memory card game) students flip over two cards at a time trying to match the famous composers. Students may need to click to accept Adobe Flash for the site to play.

In Musical Mingles students can create their own music by arranging the mingles.

There are some other fun activities like Instrument Lab and Percussion Showdown but they don't seem to work in my browser. If you click on the New York Philharmonic Kidzone above, the link will take you to their game room and you can see for yourself if it works. Percussion Showdown used to be one of favorites....

Virtual Drumming - Yep, you can virtually play the drum set here. Super fun!
