Dear Confirmation Parents,
Welcome to 5th - 8th grade confirmation! It’s an exciting time in life as your child learns the Holy Scriptures along with the six chief parts of Luther's Small Catechism. They will do this every day with you and in class Sunday mornings at 9:15. We are ready to help in your ongoing responsibility to raise them in the faith, and therefore have two simple goals: that they grow in their knowledge of the Lord and their trust in Him.
The 5th graders will have a Bible survey course with Melanie Johnson. The 6th-7th graders will cover the chief parts of the Small Catechism with Todd and Casey Pflughoeft, Karol Ketcher, and Brooke Nack as the teachers. We ask you to purchase a Small Catechism for your child for $20 (the 2017 version of the Catechism that is black with burgundy binding) and a student workbook for $25. These will be your student’s assignment book and homework resource for both years.
8th graders will use a different workbook as they focus on Apologetics, or defending the faith and putting it into practice. The cost of this workbook is $25. Jared Griesemer, Ryan Castillero, and I will be the teachers.
Weekly attendance in church and class will allow them to benefit from interaction with their teacher and fellow students. We pray their camaraderie is a blessing for them! I’d encourage your child to have a “church bag” where they keep their Bible, catechism, workbook, sermon notes, and a pen, so that they are ready for class each week.
When there are absences over family obligations, then those lessons should be completed at home with you and signed by you, to be checked off by the teacher at the next class period. If at the end of the year you are still missing half of any unit, then an additional writing assignment will be needed to continue in the program. If an accumulation of 10 absences occurs during the year, I and the elders will be in touch to determine if an alternative confirmation process is better for you. We know extenuating circumstances occur and we appreciate your assistance in keeping us informed.
We are glad to partner with you in your child’s education and look forward to seeing you at the Confirmation Information meeting in the Cafeteria 9:30am Sunday, August 18. And we pray for the camaraderie that the students will enjoy in class together. God bless you and your family in these confirmation years!
Yours in Christ, Pastor Toenjes
