A slight overbite is okay, but an underbite can severely hinder progress on cornet / trumpet. Cornet / trumpet players come in all shapes and sizes.

Thick lips tend to be suited for trombone, baritone, and tuba.
Teeth & Jaw
Front teeth are straight and even. Closed teeth meet evenly.
Body
Student's should be big enough to handle the trumpet easily.
Ear
Student is able to sing a common folk song or melody.
Braces - they can be somewhat troublesome at first, but it is not impossible to be successful with braces.
Level of Confidence is high.
Work habits are strong and achievement is high.
Parental support is strong.
Any student can be successful on any instrument even if they do not possess these ideal physical characteristics. While these suggestions are preferred, they are not absolutely crucial in instrument placement. Dedication, passion, and hard work can overcome any physical obstacle.
