End of Life Care for Trees
hosted by Saw-Whet Hardwoods

Saw-Whet Hardwoods will be showcasing their wood products created from the upcycling of urban trees. Saw-Whet works with tree care services in the Louisville area to reclaim logs from the waste stream by processing the logs into usable wood products, including live-edge slabs, lumber, and custom furniture.

"Backyard Wilderness" at the Kentucky Science Center

The Kentucky Science Center will be having special showings of the educational movie, Backyard Wilderness, throughout Tree Week in their 4-story Digital Theater!

Explore the incredible nature that is so vital to protect located just outside your back door!

Forest for the Trees: Free Film Screening

This visually and artistically unique documentary explores the physical and emotional aspects of a community of Canadian west coast tree planters. Deftly weaving together still photos and film footage, Rita Leistner, an award-winning photographer, photojournalist, filmmaker and erstwhile tree planter, depicts the contradictions in the experiences of the tree planters—the hardship and the healing; the solitude and the joy of belonging—creating an eloquent cinematic metaphor for the human condition. Finding common cause, self-knowledge and meaning in their formidable task, the tree planters restore themselves and each other in the process of restoring the environment.

Highlands-Douglass Neighborhood Association Annual Tree Planting

The HDNA is striving to reach their goal of 45% tree canopy cover in the Highlands-Douglass neighborhood. We can't stop climate change, but we can do our part in our little part of the world. To date, HDNA has planted over 700 trees and plans to put another 50 trees in the ground this October. Consider spending a weekend among friends, neighbors, and tree enthusiasts while helping our planet!

Volunteers are needed to:
- Deliver trees
- Plant trees
- Deliver mulch
- Spread mulch
- Deliver deer protection

Volunteers 18yo and older preferred.

Tree Giveaway at the Louisville Zoo

TreesLouisville is hosting a tree giveaway to kick off Tree Week! Over 500 trees of various species will be available to residents of Jefferson County. Trees will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Species include: Blackgum, Chinkapin Oak, Serviceberry, Sweet Birch, Loblolly Pine, Pecan, and Redbud.

Creation Care Fair

See a variety of ways to keep our planet green. Interactive demonstrations and displays providing practical steps you can take for an earth-friendly lifestyle - plus door prizes! Into gardening? Get tips on greening up your home and see how easy it is to make your own compost, plant a tree or select native plants for your garden. Grocery prices busting your budget? See how reducing food waste helps your wallet and the environment. Tired of dealing with all the plastic in your life? We've got solutions.

Sunday Funday Bike Ride with Bike.Cruise.Brews

Explore Louisville on two wheels! Bike.Cruise.Brews is a casual weekly cycling group open to all. Sunday's route will take you through the beautifully treed streets of Old Louisville and Central Park. All wheels are welcome to join, and free bikes will be available from LouVelo for the ride for anyone who needs one!

Mulching Tutorial and Beautification Event

When: Sunday, October 9th 3:00pm-5:00pm
Where: St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 330 N. Hubbards Ln., 40207 (park near Massie Ave. entrance)

Mulching can be one of the best things you can do for your trees, but if done incorrectly, it can be one of the most harmful! Come learn proper techniques and help mulch trees across the church's beautiful campus in preparation for winter.

Attendees are invited to help themselves to free wood chips available at the church for use at home!

Tree Identification Walk with Jacob Crider

"I wonder what that tree is?". If you've ever asked yourself this question, come join Jacob Crider on a Tree ID walk through Iroquois Park. Jacob will answer your questions while you tour and learn more about trees native to Kentucky! Along the walk you will also learn about other native plants, animals, and even about making a native garden in your own backyard!

Family Storytime is an opportunity for families to bond over shared stories and songs, as well as engage in creative activities that reinforce a lifelong love of learning. Ages 3-8 and their families.

Shelby Park Horticulture Walk

Shelby Park, 600 E. Oak St. 40203 (meet in front of the old Carnegie Library building)

Join the Olmsted Parks Conservancy at beautiful Shelby Park to learn about the historic planting plans designed by the Olmsted Brothers in 1907, how the park has changed since those early days, and what interesting plant collections are growing there now. Huge oaks and flowering understory trees complement the geometric layout of this urban greenspace. The one-mile stroll will be on paved flat surfaces and will last approximately one hour.

Green Heart to Green Corridors: Trees as Infrastructure

This discussion will include some of the work involved in the Green Heart Project utilizing trees and vegetation in an attempt to improve health, and building on that effort, looking at how an intense greening initiative could help revitalize Downtown. Seneca Park Woodlands Restoration Event

Join the Olmsted Parks Conservancy at beautiful Seneca Park to learn about and assist with ecological restoration of the urban woodlands. Their trained Park Stewards will lead participants in removal of invasive plant species that compete with our native trees and can reduce biodiversity. Expect uneven terrain and rugged working conditions.

Meet in barn-shaped building behind the large building

Join the Passionist Earth & Spirit Center to re-home rescued trees -- bring your own that you've dug at home or help plant trees that other people have donated! Attendees can also help remove invasive plants in the woods where the rescued trees will planted.

About the instructor:
For over a decade, Anne has been finding joy and inspiration in the daily exploration of yoga. Her journey began with Bikram yoga in 1998 and then, after leading classes for many years, she decided to delve deeper into the history, anatomy, and philosophy of this transformative practice. She completed her 200-hour training with Yoga East in 2013 and her 500-hour in 2019. She is honored to serve those looking to tap into a deeper understanding of their bodies and spirits.

Mulching the Cane Run Park Complex

Join TreesLouisville to "spruce" up trees they have planted in the Cane Run Park complex, which includes Cane Run Park, Farnsley Middle, Lees Lane Neighborhood Place, and Wellington Elementary.

This is a family-friendly event, no experience required! Volunteers will be trained in proper mulching techniques; equipment and snacks will be provided.

Join us in welcoming guest speaker Kris Bachtell, V.P. of Collections and Facilities for the Morton Arboretum to the Northeast Regional Library!

No more nightmares on Elm Street. Today, a completely new generation of elms is becoming available to beautify and green American cities. For these trees to have longevity, they need to be sited properly and have a a sound, well-developed structure. For mature trees to have good structure, they must be pruned properly when young. Gain an understanding of how these pruning principles can be utilized to improve your community's trees for a long, productive future.

Fall is the perfect time to plant for a stunning landscape year-round. Fill your yard with specimens straight from Bernheim's nursery. Bernheim will be selling a variety of native trees and shrubs, like bald cypress, white oak, and big leaf magnolia. All are sure to add color, shade, and beauty to your home.

Plants will be available on a first come first served basis. Bernheim members receive a 10% discount on all plant purchases. Non-members can purchase membership day-of.

Tree Pruning Expo with YouthBuild Louisville

On October 14, a team of young people will fan out on Preston Street from Broadway to East Breckinridge and all side streets to prune street trees for sidewalk clearance and clean out tree wells.

Mulching Event at Simmons College

Where: Simmons College of Kentucky, 1018 S. 7th St. (meet at corner of 7th and Kentucky Streets)

Simmons College invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to help beautify the campus with a mulching event! This event will showcase Simmons's newly updated campus, and there will be commemorative posters and signage during the event. There will also be opportunities to replant some annuals or greenery on the property.

Parking is available on 6th, 7th, or Zane Streets, or in the parking lot of 1018 S. 7th St.

Garden Commons Tree Week Workshop: Tree Rings

When: Friday, October 14th 1:00pm-2:00pm

University of Louisville Garden Commons
located at SW corner of Strickler Hall, behind Speed Art Museum Parking Garage (where drivers can park - though participants are encouraged to walk, bike carpool or take TARC - Routes 2, 4, 28 & 29 have stops nearby).

Dr. Maegan Rochner of UofL's department of Geography and Environmental Sciences will discuss tree-ring science, or dendrochronology, and its various applications to understand climate, environment, and human-environment interactions. This workshop will include a hands-on demonstration of tree coring for sample collection and examples of tree rings collected from both forest and archaeological sites across Kentucky.

Batty About Bats!

Visit Second Chances Wildlife Center for a special Halloween edition of their "Batty About Bats" educational program. Meet real bats and learn about why these fascinating animals aren't spooky - they're our friends!

This class is intended for ages 8+...that includes you, grown ups! There are many myths about bats, and we are ready to tell you the truth about them. Are they good to have around? What would happen to our ecosystem if there were no more bats? Why do farmers like bats so much? Do they carry rabies? Do they love human hair? Are they blind? Do bats brush their teeth?

Live bats will join for this program!

Wilderness Louisville Forest Adventure Campout
at Jefferson Memorial Forest

Join JMF staff for a family-friendly fall exploration and campout a Jefferson Memorial Forest. The event is held near the Forest's Environmental Education Center and offers a wide variety of activities showcasing all the Forest has to offer. Afternoon activities include archery, climbing wall, guided hikes, pumpkin decorating, hay rides, and nature play. Nighttime activities include a spooky hike, stargazing, and s'mores by the bonfire.

Fee for camping: $25 platform tent or $15 field, festival-style camping. All ages. A parent/legal guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18. Space is limited for camping.

Sunset Hike at the Falls of the Ohio State Park

Join the Falls of the Ohio Foundation and Purdue Extension for a sunset tree hike at the Falls of the Ohio! The hike will explore the Falls of the Ohio's Woodland Loop Trail where you'll learn about native tree species that call the park home, and how those trees impact the Falls' ecosystem.

The hike will begin at the trailhead for the Woodland Loop Trail near the rear of the parking lot by the digging piles. Following the hike, participants can stick around the Falls and enjoy one of the most incredible sunset views in Kentuckiana. This event is available for all ages.
