READING COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES
Background Knowledge - Ask your child what they know about something within the passage. Link their prior knowledge to what the reading passage is about this will help your child start to visualized what the author is writing about.
Ask Question - Ask your child questions while he/she is reading. By you questioning your child it will encourage your child to actively read.
Make Inferences/Draw Conclusions - Ask your child to make inferences while reading.
Make a Prediction - Ask your child to make a prediction about what might happen next in the reading passage.
Summarize - At the end of a paragraph, page or chapter (depending on the student) as your child to summarize in their own words what is happening in the reading passage.
Visualize/Mind Movie - Visualize what is happening in the story by creating a "mind movie" while reading.
