AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. They train 70,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so they can prepare all students for college, careers, and life.

By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age, AVID Elementary teachers create a ripple effect in later grades. Elementary students develop the academic habits they will need to be successful in middle school, high school, and college, in an age-appropriate and challenging way. Children learn about organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy. AVID Elementary students take structured notes and answer and ask high-level questions that go beyond routine answers.
The strong college-going culture on an AVID Elementary campus encourages students to think about their college and career plans. Schools cover their walls with college pennants and banners, and educators speak about their college experiences. College and careers are no longer foreign concepts, and teachers provide the academic foundation students need to be on a path for college and career success. AVID Elementary closes the opportunity gap before it begins.
Schools may begin AVID Elementary by training teachers across a certain grade level(s) or the entire campus. The training can start with a group as small as four participating in three days of AVID professional learning.

Our nation’s schools are full of students who possess a desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard, but many of them do not truly have the opportunity to be college-ready. These are often the students who will be the first in their families to attend college and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help these students succeed on a path to college and career success.
To address this need, AVID has developed the AVID Elective course. For one period a day, students receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses. Districts have the flexibility to decide how many AVID Elective classes to start and which grade levels will implement AVID first.
The power of AVID Secondary is the ability to impact students in the AVID Elective class and all students throughout the campus. AVID Secondary can have an effect on the entire school by providing classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve engagement and success for all students. Teachers can take what they've learned at AVID training back to any classroom to help all students, not just those in AVID, to become more college- and career-ready.
In November 2019 Chase Middle School hosted it's first AVID Showcase event. Educators from around the area attended to learn more about the AVID program and how Chase has found success with AVID implementation for over a decade. AVID Elective students were to stars of this successful event! Way to go Chase!

The AVID program emphasizes use of research based instruction strategies for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading.
Writing strategies that can be found in an AVID building include quick writes, authentic writing, and focused note taking.
Inquiry strategies helps stretch a learner by providing them with opportunities to delve deeper into content, engage in discussions, and learn through a tutorial process.
Students learn teamwork and collective responsibility through a variety of collaborative learning experiences. These strategies can range from the use of Kagan Cooperative Learning to project based learning to Socratic Seminars.
The AVID program works diligently to provide students with many opportunities to learn organizational and time management skills. Students use binders, focused notes, graphic organizers, and set personalized SMART goals.
Reading is essential for all content areas. AVID strategies help students read text in a critical manner in order to enhance their reading experiences. Strategies for reading include reciprocal reading, a focus on vocabulary, and marking the text.
AVID provides engaging text for teachers at AVID sites with corresponding 'reading to learn' and 'writing to learn' strategies. Text provided in AVID weekly is current and relevant to what students learn at school, and in life. AVID staff can access these texts by logging into their MyAVID accounts.
The AVID elective class is offered at all five AVID secondary schools. Students who are interested in enrolling in the AVID course must meet certain criteria, submit an application, and be interviewed by staff at their school site - or their future school site. If you are a student and interested in the AVID elective, contact your counselor today for more information!

Students enrolled in the AVID Elective will engage in lessons that allow them to explore college and career paths, organizational techniques, a wide variety of WICOR strategies, and hear from guest speakers. AVID students engage in regular discourse with peers and with their teacher to develop higher order thinking skills that will assist them with all course work.
AVID students have a unique opportunity every week to engage in a tutorial process with their peers and a college age tutor twice a week. Prior to tutorials, students must complete a tutorial request form to indicate an areas of need - and they must indicate a point of confusion. When in class, students are then divided into tutorial groups based on content area/need. College age tutors help facilitate the process, but most tutorials are truly led by students helping students.
