社会技術研究所は、2000年に始まった文部科学省直轄の研究プロジェクトから発足し、社会に役立つ応用的な社会科学的・人間科学的アプローチの研究を行ってきました。村上陽一郎元学長と岡本浩一名誉教授が直轄事業の発足当初から直轄で携わり、これまでに茨城県東海村のJOC臨界事故の心理学的研究や、　パワハラを含むトラウマに対するブリーフセラピーや心理生理学的測定を用いたアプローチなどの研究が行われてきたを実施してきました。

2024年度には組織を刷新し、新しい研究プロジェクト「AIと新技術に関する研究」を立ち上げました。AIを中心に、GNR（遺伝子工学、ナノテクノロジー、ロボット工学）革命が21世紀に与える影響と課題を研究しています。

Institute of Applied Human and Social Sciences

The Institute of Applied Human and Social Sciences was established from a research project under the direct control of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology that began in 2000, and has been conducting applied research in the social sciences and humanities that is useful to society. Former President Yoichiro Murakami and Professor Emeritus Koichi Okamoto have been involved in the direct control project since its inception, conducting psychological research on the JOC criticality accident in Tokai-mura, Ibaraki Prefecture, and on approaches using brief therapy and psychophysiological measurements for trauma, including power harassment.

In the fiscal year 2024, we restructured our organization and launched a new research project, 'Research on AI and New Technologies.' This project focuses on studying the impacts and challenges of the GNR (Genetic Engineering, Nanotechnology, and Robotics) revolution in the 21st century, with a particular emphasis on AI.
