Department of Global Innovation Studies
The Department of Global Innovation Studies is affectionately known by its nickname, "GINOS." GINOS offers the only program at Toyo University in which all classes are conducted entirely in English. Not only in the classroom, but also in the dedicated learning and community space for GINOS students—called "GINOS Studio"—the use of English is a strict rule. Approximately 30% of the students in the department are international students, representing a wide range of nationalities. This creates a vibrant environment where intercultural exchange is a part of daily life. In this English-rich environment, students can devote four years to learning and growing.
At the Department of Global Innovation Studies, it is mandatory for domestic students to study abroad at a partner institution for either one or two semesters starting from the fall semester of their second year. The study abroad destinations are overseas universities or institutions with which Toyo University or the department has formal agreements and where courses can be taken in English.
If certain requirements are met, the credits earned at the host institution can be transferred and recognized as credits at Toyo University. Regardless of the duration of the study abroad period, a scholarship of 350,000 yen is provided uniformly (please note that this amount differs from that of other departments). For more details, please refer to the Academic Catalog.
Please note that students who do not meet the study abroad requirements set by Toyo University and the host institution will not be allowed to participate in the program. Students must continue to improve their language proficiency and maintain good academic standing even after enrollment.
You might be wondering, “What exactly do you study in innovation?”
At GINOS, we nurture individuals who can drive change around the world through small-group, problem-based learning. Working alongside international students in group projects and taking classes conducted entirely in English, students develop the confidence and skills to communicate effectively with people from diverse global backgrounds.
One of GINOS's key features is its collaboration with top universities and research institutions, giving students access to cutting-edge knowledge and technologies. Students also gain hands-on experience in leadership and practical skills through projects in cooperation with businesses and local communities. Every student takes on the challenge of long-term study abroad, building the capacity to thrive in international settings. These experiences also help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the growth of local communities.
The curriculum is carefully designed to provide a balanced mix of broad global knowledge and practical skills. While taking foundational classes such as “Study Skills,” students can deepen their expertise in areas that match their interests, such as entrepreneurship, international business, or cultural and social studies. GINOS also offers lectures featuring successful entrepreneurs and innovators, providing students with inspiring insights and real-world motivation.
Innovation means combining new technologies and knowledge to create products and services that have never existed before—transforming society and the economy in the process. Credit cards and smartphones are classic examples of innovation. Through your studies in this department, you too can aim to become a future innovator.
