Erina IWASAKI is professor at Faculty of Foreign Studies, Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. Her current research includes socioeconomic studies of North Africa and Middle East (especially Egypt and Tunisia), based on fieldworks. She also conducts research on water and irrigation, communal behaviors in rural Egypt and Tunisia, in a bid to bring to light the regional diversity and community in North African societies. Kiyoko KUNO is associate professor at the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies, Doshisha University. She specializes in minority studies and area studies of Spain. Her research interests focus on inclusion and exclusion of minorities in Spain, such as immigrants and gypsies, relating these matters with regional nationalism. She is also interested in folklore of Catalonia and ‘Gypsy Music’. Hirotake MAEDA is professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tokyo Metropolitan University. Nobuo MISAWA is professor at the Faculty of Sociology, Toyo University and the head of Asian Cultures Research Institute (ACRI), Toyo University. He specializes in the history of the relationship between Modern Japan and Middle East (especially the Ottoman Empire and Turkey) based on the analysis of official and private documents and various kinds of text (newspapers, magazines, literature, etc.). In addition, he utilizes the image in audiovisual materials of the art and entertainment works. His main publications include Türk-Japon Ticaret İlişkileri (İstanbul Ticaret Odası, 2011), and “The First Japanese who Resided in the Ottoman Empire: the Young Journalist Noda and the Student Merchant Yamada” (Mediterranean World, 21, pp. 51-69, 2012).

Ryo MIYASHITA is associate professor at Graduate School of Humanities in Osaka University. He is specialized in the history of Turkish literature and also known as a translator of Modern Turkish novels. Current interest is in the transformation of literary aesthetics during the transitional period from Ottoman to Turkish. Nanako MURATA is professor at the Faculty of Letters, Toyo University. Her field of interests lies in history and culture of modern Greece and its surrounding world in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. She has been recently conducting research on the relations between memories and historical narratives, focusing on Greek Orthodox refugees who were forced to emigrate to Greece, their alleged motherland, from Asia Minor just before the founding of the Republic of Turkey. In terms of “the refugees’ sea,” she also has been concerned with how those who moved over the Mediterranean into an “unknown world” saw the sea and how they represented it. Her major publications include Modern and Contemporary History of Greece(Chuokoron-Shinsha, 2012, in Japanese), The Olympics as an Academic Discipline(Nanako Murata and Yuzuru Hashiba eds., Yamakawa Shuppansha, 2016, in Japanese) and “Memory or History?: Narratives on the Rescue Operation of Greek Refugees by a Japanese Ship at Smyrna in 1922” (Toyo University Kiyo, 72(45), pp.157-204, 2020, in Japanese).

Ryoko SACHI is associate professor at the Faculty of Sociology of Toyo University. As a cultural anthropologist, she has conducted ethnographic research among European Romanies (Manouches, Gitans, Roms, and others often called “Gypsies”), focusing on themes of lifestyle, religion, art and memory. She is the author of Gypsies in Contemporary France (Sekaishisosha, 2017, in Japanese). Publications include “Decline and restructuring of Gypsies' Nomadism in France: Beyond the Nomadic/Sedentary Binary” (in Sedentarization among Nomadic Peoples in Asia and Africa, Kazunobu Ikeya ed., Senri Ethonological Studies, 95, pp. 87-116, 2017), and “Chacun a sa caravane : l’habitat caravane et l’organisation sociale chez les Manouches semi-sédentaires ou sédentaires dans la région paloise” (Journal des anthropologues,120-121, pp. 399- 416, 2010).

Kei TAKAHASHI is professor at the Faculty of Letters, Toyo University. His major research interest is Sufism in modern and postmodern societies. His specialty is the history of Sufi orders in modern Egypt. His current research focuses on Islam and Sufism in America and he has conducted field research on Muslim communities in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2016.
