1. Professor Pulickel Ajayan, Rice University, Texas, USA
Title: Materials science of atomic layers
Outline of the talk:
Nanomaterials are classified into 1D, 2D and 3D ones. Professor Ajayan demonstrated future intelligent 2D materials focusing on single-, double- and multi-layered graphene and boron nitride. The details of the synthetic methodologies and amazing physical and chemical properties of the 2D materials were explained. The next industrial revolution may well be initiated by those 2D nanomaterials.

2. Professor Kaustav Banerjee, University of California Santa Barbara, California, USA
Title: 2D electronics: Graphene and beyond
Outline of the talk:
The designing and development of ultra efficient “green” electronic devices are urgently required to solve worldwide energy problems. 2D materials such as graphene and boron nitride are promising candidates for primal elements of “green” quantum devices; e.g., room temperature electronic tunnelling transistors and bio sensors. A lot of innovative ideas about intelligent electronic and biological devices were demonstrated.

The Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre and the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary New Science have already started research and educational programmes with Professor Ajayan’s Research Group, Rice University, and the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, University of California Santa Barbara. We discussed future “Ph.D Double Degree Programmes” with Professors Ajayan and Banerjee after the seminar. Note that the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary New Science, which was established in 2007 to create advanced young researchers in collaboration with the Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre, has already exchanged MoUs on “Ph.D Double Degree Programmes” with l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6) and l’Université de Nantes, France.
