I grew up in Pacifica, CA, and I have lived in Northern California, Walt Disney World, Thailand, and Alaska. I returned back to the Pacifica three years ago to earn my Master's Degree in Education and California Teaching Credential. Currently, I am a 2nd grade co-teacher at an all boys school.
I am educator who guides students to develop a strong sense of self, curiosity about their world, respect for others and themselves, a joy for learning, and skills relevant to their lives and their futures. I have had the opportunity to work with ESL students, dyslexic students, and a wide range of ages from preschool to 8th grade. I have found many differences in how to best help each group of students, and constantly reflect on how to help the specific students I am working with at that time. However, I have found that all students benefit from a good relationship with their teacher and a classroom community in which they feel like they belong. Once those basic needs are met, we can work to build skills and knowledge.
In my free time, I love practicing yoga, hiking, trying to immerse myself in cultural landscapes when I travel, volunteering to clean up the community, going to live music events, going to comedy shows, listening to podcasts to make folding laundry enjoyable, and spending as much quality time as possible with my niece, my family, and my friends.
I believe that every child is able to learn and is gifted in their own way. I plan lessons with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in mind by including strategies that are necessary for some and good for all. For example, this webpage uses the Lexend Deca font which was designed to increase reading speed for everyone, and especially for ELLs (English language learners) and people with dyslexia. Being a teacher is committing yourself academically and emotionally to the children and the school as a whole. It is helping children find their passions and strengths while also helping them through their weaknesses. There are many different ways to learn, and by guiding students to explore many different strategies of learning, teachers can help all students find what works best for them to find success. If weaknesses are creating a barrier that is hindering student leaning, accommodations and modifications must be made with a future goal of independence in mind.
Students are most successful when they feel a sense of belonging and support in their classroom community. Building great rapport with students is imperative to fostering success and creating a positive classroom community. It supports students in feeling safe to make mistakes and learn from them, and go on to become impactful members of the world. Getting to individually know my students gives me genuine joy, and it helps me learn more about student interests and weave those interests into the curriculum for more engaging lessons.
