bahia del coco

(19-feb-2019)

We are in Bahia Del Coco, Costa Rica aboard Microbe. We have just sailed in and have our feet in the sand at a small beach palapa that has wifi and lunch. The USA government shutdown has delayed our receiving official boat ownership papers (Documentation) so Costa Rica has asked us to leave, not actually us, just the boat. So we have not been able to go into any marinas. We anchored next to one marina and took the dinghy in to get wifi. They wanted $40 to tie the dinghy to their pier and $261 to bring our catamaran in for a night. We anchored in the bay and had a peaceful and cheap night aboard. Spent the next week or so anchoring in nice bays along the coast. We are now in the Popagayo area where strong winds cross over low land from the Atlantic. Had a rough sleep last night and tough sail today - winds on the nose from 8 knots to 27 knots - frustrating!! Tomorrow we head out 150 miles (1 overnight) for Puesta Del Sol, Nicaragua, then onward to Mexico. The boat is still holding together - so far. Had an interesting experience the other day, checked the oil on one engine and found it to be empty, so checked the other and found it to also be empty- nothing on the dipstick. We had just ran both as we maneuvered to anchor. I then unscrewed the plastic top off the oil filler spout and checked again. Now the dipstick registered full. I have never had Yanmar diesel engines before and was surprised that the vacuum would hold the oil up in the engine, even with it warm. Live and learn. Gotta go now- tide is coming up and the dinghy is dragged up on the beach.
