Ruth and I went to the open Saturday market yesterday (June 15, 2008). Many, many stalls of food cooking and stalls of fresh produce. Saw lots of fruit and vegetables that we didn't recognize. Bought some purple fruit that was good and all gone now. We think it was a type of passion fruit. We bought 4 cucumbers – 75 cents, a pineapple - 70 cents and tomatoes, funny lettuce, bananas-a bit different flavor than the usual, and some ginger root. We also did the local version of take-out and ordered some chicken and fried noodles all wrapped in paper. Really good if you take out some of the chilies. We did not try the fried chocolate. Since we were taking a taxi home we decided to get some of the heavy stuff and went to the booze market. A case of Schweppes tonic is less than $9. We bought some Malt Scotch made in Edinburgh for $7.50. It is cheaper here to drink single malt than milk. We plan to try more different produce next time. Only problem is meat – but my German friend in the Lagoon catamaran is gonna show us where to buy fresh Australian beef. There are 2 air conditioned shopping centers near town that have supermarkets with the usual, milk, cereal, frozen food, and packaged goods. We finally! found some coffee filters, bought all they had even if they were not the right size. It is still humid and hot!
