In the year 1957, Japan Baptist Mission asked Pastor William “Dub” Jackson to plant the first English-language Baptist church, sponsored by Southern Baptists overseas.
Pastor Dub Jackson and his wife Doris, met with 27 people who were interested in pursuing the project.
A temporary worship building was placed on the current location. And Tokyo Baptist Church worship service began in 1957. Through the sacrificial giving of the founding members of TBC, this current property 9–2 Hachiyama-cho was purchased, and the current TBC building was built and dedicated in November, 1959.
During the last 66 years, TBC membership has grown from 29 to more than 700 members that meet at three locations – Shibuya, Misato, and West Tokyo. There is now a strong need to build a new building for:
The growth of the church:
The current congregation has outgrown the building.
To build for the next generation with the hope that they will continue reaching out and building as guided by the Lord, we simply need more seating capacity, especially for Sunday morning services.
The safety of the building:
The current TBC building is 66 years old. While it meets the building code that was in place 66 years ago, due to the subsequent earthquakes, the building code in Japan has been changed several times. It is desirable to upgrade the building to meet the current building code.
The new auditorium will be built on the current TBC parking lot. The estimated cost is 462,000,000* yen.
Currently, we have already raised 236 million yen which is 51% of the total cost to build the new auditorium. We target to cover the remaining 226,000,000* yen which is 49% of the total cost within a year, praying that the new auditorium will be available by 2027.
Our Faith Goal will be:
Step 1: Faith Giving of the remaining 226,000,000* yen by June 2026. (12 months from July 2025)
Step 2: Building of the new auditorium. From July 2026 to June 2027. The target dedication of the new Auditorium will be in July 2027.
We have designed a special envelope for this purpose which you can use or you may choose to give online by visiting the church’s website. When you give online, remember to select "Impact Building Fund."
"There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven ... a time to tear down and a time to build ... I know that everything God does will last forever, there is no adding to it or taking from it. God works so that people will be in awe of him." (Eccle. 3:1, 3b, 14)
