Well, friends, it's May.
For Teaching Fellows programs across our organization, that means hiring season is upon us! While we want you to take ownership of the responsibility of securing employment as a teacher, we hope to equip and support you along the way. It can be a challenge to know where to start. Here's a quick acronym to think through as you get ready to SCORE a teaching position for the fall! 💯
S - STUDY
We strongly encourage you to take some time to read through the HIRING GUIDE here on the cohort website. This guide provides in-depth context and advice for beginning your hiring process as a new teacher. If you have questions from your self-study, don't hesitate to reach out to me.
Another helpful tool to use is our School Partner Database, which includes the schools we partner with in Center Township. (Note: Please contact us if you have questions about whether a school is considered an ITF partner school.)
C - CONSIDER
One of the most important things you can do to set yourself up for success as a teacher is to understand why you want to take on this important responsibility. Reflection is something we value at ITF, because taking the time to do this early pays dividends! Some questions to ask yourself:
What are my top personal values? How do I want these values to be reflected in my work?
What is my philosophy of teaching?
What supports do I need to stay encouraged in the face of challenges?
To learn more about the importance of developing this strong foundation in your early years of teaching, watch our inspiring Teaching Fellows roundtable discussion "The Power of Your Why."
Once you've established your "why," talk about it! Whether you're connecting with me during office hours or starting a discussion with fellow cohort members, engaging in helpful dialogue with others can be a good way to get some energy around your purpose as well as fire you up to share about this during your interviews.
O - ORGANIZE
If you haven't already, revisit your responses to the Interview Preparation Activity. This way, your answers to standard questions will be fresh in your mind! Also be sure to consult the Essential Traits of Great Teachers and The Opportunity Myth, which will help ground you in TNTP's philosophy of education. Additionally, check out some other commonly asked interview questions to be extra confident!
R - REPRESENT
A proven way to engage with the hiring process is to get to know our partners. As we learn about hiring events schools are hosting, we will make sure to get that information out to you as soon as possible. Don't be afraid to network with school leaders -- and be sure to send a "Thank you for your time" email 3 to 5 business days after your interview.
E - EXECUTE
Now, you're ready to apply! Feel free to reach out to school leaders directly, schedule school tours, and dive into your hiring process. We encourage you to consider a few things as you determine where you want to land: schools that are within our ITF partners (Center Township), schools that have a high need for your subject area/expertise, and schools that are aligned with your personal vision and values. We will keep you posted as we learn of open positions!
Please keep our team informed of your application and interview process. When you secure your teaching position, please submit your signed offer letter or contract using the Hiring Documentation Form so that we have this on record.
Best of luck!
