Historical Context
Over the last decade, we have collectively made remarkable progress in developing and implementing more rigorous curricula due to invaluable content developers, dedicated educators and ambitious communities. However, as a nation, we still have work to do to improve literacy outcomes, particularly among students from marginalized racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
We Believe
Curriculum must be more inclusive of students' assets, identities, and experiences including resources to support teachers to harness their students’ existing strengths and brilliance.
By incorporating content that is culturally responsive and linguistically affirming we will enhance student engagement, motivation, and agency. This will prepare students to thrive in a wonderfully diverse and interconnected world.
Through continuing to advocate for and support the evolution of curriculum, we have an opportunity to further impact student growth and outcomes in a lasting way. To do this, we offer a set of Design Principles, meant to support educators, families and communities in this work. By working together to ensure the curriculum is designed to address the Design Principles, we can create positive shifts in learning experiences that are meaningful, invaluable, and inclusive for all students.
How Can We Help
The CRLA Design Principles help define the core attributes to look for in curriculum. The Action Steps lay out key considerations and activities related to each state of the curriculum journey: learning and reflection, advocacy and policy development, review and selection and implementation and adaptation. They also show how each stakeholder group can engage at each step.
