Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, came into existence as Agricultural College in 1906 and has celebrated its centenary year during 2006. TNAU was established in 1971 and ever since its inception, TNAU has been in forefront of Agricultural Education and Research. TNAU has developed more than 850 varieties in a wide array of crops, 1500 production technologies and 166 farm implements and machineries which enabled the state of Tamil Nadu to achieve food security by producing more than 120 lakh tonnes of food grains. TNAU is in the heart of the Coimbatore, which is one of the major cities in Tamil Nadu, India that is well connected by road, rail and air with other parts of the country.
The Centre for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (CPMB&B) was established in 1989 to take up research in plants based on cues from the science of Plant Molecular Biology. Since the inception of CPMB, there have been several research initiatives in economically important crops with multitude of objectives, but leading to one broader goal namely "Crop improvement". The center offÂers programs leading to B. Tech., in Biotechnology, B. Tech. in Bioinformatics; M. Sc., (Agriculture) in Biotechnology; M. Sc., (Agriculture) in Bioinformatics and Ph. D., in Plant Biotechnology
