Jamie Maldonado

TMHS English 1 Teacher

Greetings!

I am an English teacher at Tuloso-Midway High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. I spent 5 years teaching Special Education and English at Sinton High School in Sinton, Texas, and am beginning my 5th year here at TM.

My teaching career began with a focus in Special Education, which lead me to co-teach English classes, and work as an inclusion teacher. My focus was making objectives and lessons accessible to students who struggle with reading in the main stream classroom. Over the years I have taught English 1-4, as well as remediation and review courses for students taking the English 1 and 2 EOC exams, and TSI college entrance exam.

I hold teaching certifications in English grades 8-12, and Special Education grades Kinder-12. I genuinely enjoy helping students master their use of language to serve a multitude of purposes, and helping to foster a deeper appreciation for literature. My passion, however, is in helping students who struggle with different concepts of language find a way to make reading and writing work for them.

I have two wonderful kids who take part in numerous activities in the community, so you might see us out and about in the area! I have a deep love for the beach, being outdoors, and I am an avid runner. I graduated from Flour Bluff, and most of my family lives in the area. I have a strong connection to this area and the people here. My ultimate goal in teaching, and in life, is to leave the world a little bit better, in any way that I'm able.

My goals in teaching:

      • I believe that students learn best when information is relevant to their lives. I work to show students how the overall concepts that they are learning in my class will help them in the future, especially when they feel like they'll "never use this again" in their lives.
      • I want all of my students to have confidence in their abilities, no matter what performance level they may be at. Often students are scared to share their thoughts; I hope to create a classroom environment where they feel safe taking chances and sharing their ideas.
      • I never want a student to feel as if a learning challenge defines who they are, or who they might become. I hope that when students leave my classroom they see their challenges as mere obstacles to work around, not blockages to success.
