Religion in San Antonio is an examination of how religious beliefs and practices function within the specific context of San Antonio, TX. This class emphasizes the local nature of religious beliefs and practices as well as how religions are intertwined with culture, both influencing the cultures of which they are part and being influenced by those cultures. Students are taught methods of inquiry related to history, the philosophy of religion, and the social sciences as they explore not only how religion has shaped the development of this particular city (San Antonio) and county (Bexar) but also how this city and county have shaped religion.

The aim is to develop “religious literacy” so that students can become familiar with and accustomed to the variety of religious expressions found in the context of one of the largest cities in the United States. Similarly, this course functions to create awareness of how religion influences everything from San Antonio’s architecture, to its landmarks, festivals, population demographics, etc. This is why a central component of this course will be several field trips to religious sites in the San Antonio area.
