Homework/ Assessments/ Math Facts

1. HOMEWORK

What is in the silver folder that comes home on Fridays?

On Fridays, please look for your child's silver folder full of their graded work as well as the homework packet for the following week. You will know what math fact your child is practicing by looking in the graded work pile. Here, your child will find their scored multiplication fact test which will either say, "Passed- move on to your 3's" or, if the student did not answer each of the problems correctly, the math fact test will say, "Keep Practicing your 2's."  

On Monday, after you have seen the homework, your child should move their homework packet to their Homework Binder which they will bring back and forth to school and home each day.  (The HW packet can live in the inside pocket of the binder or, if the child prefers, we can hole punch the packet)

The students' Homework Binders should also be the home for their spelling activity list and math facts reference sheets. 

The homework packet will be due each Friday morning. 

Here is a breakdown of 3rd grade weekly homework:

✏️ One 2-sided Math Workbook page called "Daily Review." 

This is a spiral review of what we have been working on in math.  (Students may choose how to complete this.  For example, they can do 5 problems a night, or perhaps select two nights in which they'll complete one side or the other.  Please encourage whatever works best for your family.)

📝  Spelling Activity Sheet: Complete at least 3 activities a week. 

• 2 Activities must be written and stapled to the HW packet.

• I suggest starting by writing the words 3x each on Mondays

📚  Reading for 20 minutes each weeknight  (fill in their reading log)  

         👉 Parents- please sign the reading log on Thursday nights. 😊

 💭  Practice multiplication facts & the bible memory verse for the quizzes on Friday.

📒 HOMEWORK should take about 30 minutes each weeknight + 20 minutes of reading 

👉 Please email me if it is taking much longer than this. 💜

2. WEEKLY ASSESSMENTS 

Every Friday all 3rd grade students will have a spelling test.  They will also have a quick Math Fact Quiz and recite their Bible memory verse.

3. MATH FACTS

We have weekly timed math fact tests so that the kids will continually be working on their "math fluency" throughout the year.  This means that they will work their way (at their own pace) up from testing their x2 facts all the way to the x12 facts.  After that (usually in the spring), kids graduate to division math facts. Even though the tests are timed at 3 minutes, I try to downplay the timed part of it and just remind them to work hard and fast to do the best they can.  If the child has memorized all of the math facts, they should finish the page in plenty of time.  Please see the note below 👇 about checking the silver folder to know what math fact your child should be practicing.

🏡  Ways to study for your math facts at home:

1. The classic- make flashcards- they really work!  It can be helpful to have a set in the car and one at home.  

2. Call-outs while you drive!  Test your child on their facts as you drive- they don't even need flashcards for this.

3. Multiplication Songs- There are so many youtube videos with multiplication songs- just search for "multiplication song for x2" or whatever fact your child is on. Here are a couple that we use in class: x2 Song-Can't stop the feeling,     x3 multiplication song, x4/multiples of 4 rap

4. Can you Beat the Clock?  This is a paper that we will send home in your Friday Folder to help your child practice with a time limit.

5. Online Review Games and Apps:

• Click “Auto-Scored Quizzes”

• Click “Multiplication” or “Division”.

• Click the number that corresponds with the fact group you are working to master.

• Type your name and click “Start Self Correcting Quiz Now”.

• Complete the quiz
