AP English 3
Instructor: Dr. A. Patrick Smith
Course Description: Advanced Placement English 3 is a college level course offered to students in high school. This course requires students to analyze, synthesize and create rhetorical situations. All work prepares students for the AP Exam. Due to the nature of this course, students will be required to read a variety of nonfiction and fiction literary forms. The readings chosen are of rhetorical and literary merit for the AP Exam and for college.
Course Requirements: Students are responsible for being prepared, bringing their texts, and bringing the necessary supplies to class each day. No excuses. Folders, notebook paper, a pencil, and a black ink pen are required. The school supplied Chromebooks are required. Other supplies will be added if necessary. Students are also responsible for purchasing the outside reading materials and for paying the fee for the AP exam.
Grading System: The grading system for AP English is based on a points possible system. The following grading categories will be used to derive each nine weeks grade:
Major exams 100-200 points each
Analysis 10-200 points each
Journal 100 points each
Essays 40-100 points each
AP Writings 20 points each
AP MC 10-100 points each
Quizzes 10-20 points each
Because of the level of work you are asked to maintain, 5 points will be added at the end of each nine weeks grading period.
Class Rules: Check them out on the wall.
Incentives for Good Behavior: 1. Verbal and written praise.
2. Positive communication to parents.
3. Prizes.
Consequences for Misbehavior:
(consequences depend on the severity and/or continuance of misbehavior)
1. Verbal warning.
2. Contact Parent.
3. Administrative intervention.
Method of Communicating Expectations:
1. Verbal or written comments to the student.
2. Written letter or phone call to parents.
3. Example of the educator.
Tardies/Absences: Students are considered tardy if they are not in their seats before the bell rings. Only work from an excused absence may be made up. The student must check with the teacher for missed assignments. Missed tests, quizzes, AP writings, etc., will be made up the following week after the absence. The initiative to complete missed assignments is the student’s responsibility.
Field Trips, Competitions, etc.: If you have bad conduct, are failing, or are missing work, you will not be allowed to go on the field trip, competition, etc.
Electronic Device Instructions: Check them out on the wall.
Dismissal: The teacher will dismiss the class - not the bell.
Restroom: Do not ask to go to the restroom or during class. Go between classes.
If you do not understand something, ask.
Time management is crucial. Waiting until the night before the due date will result in unneeded stress.
Remember the contract you signed. I do.
AI - if you have any AI in work in which AI is not required (I make that determination), the grade for that assignment earns a 0.
