2026 Fall & Winter Dates Available
Crisp mornings. Warm afternoons. Bright red maples, golden birches, deep green spruce and mountains stretching as far as you can see. Add a good hike, a scenic drive, maybe a chairlift ride, and a little sauna time at the end of the day—and you’ve got just about everything you need for the perfect Maine fall weekend.
If you’re planning a getaway around Sugarloaf, Rangeley, Kingfield or Stratton, here’s one way to spend a fall weekend exploring some of our favorite spots in Western Maine.
Start your weekend in Rangeley, where the mountains meet the lakes and the fall scenery starts almost immediately.
Rather than rushing straight to Sugarloaf, take your time and make the drive part of the adventure. Western Maine is full of back roads, overlooks and little places worth pulling over for. Pack a coffee, throw a camera in the car and leave yourself plenty of time.
One of the best places to take in the fall colors is Quill Hill, just outside Rangeley.
The road climbs through the woods before opening up to a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and lakes. On a clear fall day, the view is hard to beat—and it’s a great reminder that sometimes the best part of a Maine road trip is simply getting out of the car and looking around.
From Quill Hill, continue south toward the Sugarloaf area and enjoy the changing scenery along the way.
As you make your way toward Sugarloaf, the landscape starts to change. Lakes and rolling hills give way to bigger mountain views, and the road winds through some of the most beautiful fall scenery in the state.
Once you arrive at Sugarloaf, there are plenty of ways to spend the afternoon.
You don’t have to be skiing to enjoy Sugarloaf in the fall.
A scenic chairlift ride is an easy way to get above the trees and see the Western Maine mountains from a completely different perspective. As the chairlift climbs, the views open up across the Carrabassett Valley and surrounding peaks.
It’s also a nice option if you’re traveling with a group that has different ideas about what constitutes a "hike."
Some people want to summit a mountain. Others would rather ride a chairlift and drink a beer afterward. Both are valid Maine fall activities.
If hiking is more your speed, Western Maine has no shortage of options.
For a bigger adventure, head into the Bigelow Preserve.
The Bigelow Range offers some of the best hiking in Western Maine, with trails ranging from challenging climbs to longer mountain days. The higher you climb, the more expansive the views become—and in the fall, the surrounding mountains are covered in color.
A Bigelow hike is best suited for experienced hikers who are prepared for changing mountain weather, variable trail conditions and a full day on the trail.
Pack layers, plenty of water and snacks, and give yourself enough time to enjoy the hike rather than racing to the summit.
Looking for something a little more approachable?
Burnt Mountain is another great option in the Sugarloaf area. The hike offers a rewarding mountain experience without requiring the commitment of a full Bigelow day.
It's the kind of hike that pairs perfectly with a fall weekend: work up a sweat, take in the views, then head back toward the valley for the next part of the adventure.
For something different, explore the trails around Stratton Brook Hut.
The hut is part of the Maine Huts & Trails network and offers access to miles of scenic trails through the woods and mountains. In the fall, the combination of colorful hardwoods, mountain streams and crisp mountain air makes this area especially beautiful.
You don't necessarily need to make a full hut-to-hut trip to enjoy the area. A shorter outing around the hut can be a great addition to a weekend itinerary.
Not every fall adventure has to involve climbing a mountain.
Western Maine is also a great place to explore by bike. Bring your mountain bike or gravel bike and take advantage of the network of roads and trails around the Carrabassett Valley.
Or swap your hiking boots for golf shoes.
Fall is a fantastic time to play a round at Sugarloaf Golf Club, when cooler temperatures make for comfortable conditions and the surrounding mountains are putting on their annual color show.
Whether you spend the afternoon biking, golfing, hiking or simply exploring, the goal is the same:
Spend as much time outside as possible.
This is where we think every good fall adventure should end.
After a day spent hiking, biking, golfing or exploring the mountains, there’s something pretty great about slowing everything down.
Build a fire. Pour yourself a drink. Throw on some wood. Step into a hot sauna while the evening air turns cold around you.
At Timber & Steam, we bring the sauna to you, making it easy to add a little heat and relaxation to your Western Maine getaway.
Imagine finishing a fall day with the mountains outside, the stars coming out overhead and the sauna warming up beside your cabin, rental house or campsite.
Go from cold mountain air → hot sauna → cool evening air → back into the sauna.
Repeat as necessary.
The beauty of a Western Maine fall getaway is that you don't have to cram everything into one day.
Make it a weekend.
Day 1:
Arrive in Rangeley → Quill Hill → scenic drive toward Sugarloaf → dinner and a relaxing evening.
Day 2:
Bigelow, Burnt Mountain or Stratton Brook → lunch → bike ride or golf → sauna.
Day 3:
Sleep in → coffee → one last hike or scenic chairlift ride → head home feeling like you actually got away.
And if your idea of the perfect weekend involves fewer scheduled activities and more sitting around a fire, that's okay too.
Sometimes the best part of fall in Maine is simply being outside with good people, nowhere you need to be and nowhere else you need to go.
If you're planning a fall trip to Sugarloaf, Kingfield, Carrabassett Valley, Stratton or the Rangeley area, consider adding a private sauna experience to the weekend.
Timber & Steam Mobile Sauna brings a wood-fired sauna directly to your Western Maine getaway, so you can spend the day exploring and the evening warming up.
Because around here, we think a day in the mountains deserves a pretty good ending.
Explore. Sweat. Sauna. Repeat.
