Comprehensive Distance Learning and Special Education Services
The school district will offer several ways for students with disabilities to engage in learning even while they are away from school. These learning opportunities are outlined below.
Students with disabilities will be provided with online assignments and lessons via Canvas. Canvas will be the “bookshelf” to hold assignments and communication from teachers. Special education teachers will collaborate with general education teachers to determine curriculum level needs and provide accommodations as listed on individual IEPs.
Special education teachers will work with families and students to determine the curriculum(s) to use based on student needs. Some of the curriculum options could include:
· Acellus- Acellus Special Education courses are specifically designed for students with disabilities, and incorporate the tools needed to assess, adapt, and individualize course material for students. These courses have been developed to be achievable by students with special needs, while still incorporating the rigor of standards-based courses. Content is taught at a deeper level, allowing students to spend more time on each concept, and increasing the students' depth of knowledge on each topic. This enables students to approach, and even meet, grade-level standards.
· IXL- IXL provides comprehensive standards-aligned online content for math and language arts for grades K-12. Students learn at their own pace- IXL’s adaptive questions automatically adjust to the correct level of difficulty. The program begins with a diagnostic assessment to accurately assess student knowledge. IXL then creates a personalized learning action plan. Teachers, students, and parents will have access to progress reports at any time to see growth.
· Centervention- Centervention consists of online games and videos to help students in grades K-8 improve social and emotional skills. These games are fun for students, automatically gather data so educators can monitor progress, and include supplemental lessons to reinforce learning.
In addition to the online curriculum listed above, teachers will use Canvas to upload individualized content for students in other IEP goal areas. They will draw from a wide variety of resources and work with families to determine the best approach for each individual student.
Will students who qualify for special education services be able to attend in-person focus group session during Comprehensive Distance Learning?
Starting in October, we hope to bring in small focus groups for those students on IEPs, as well as other small groups of students needing individualized support. IEP teams will determine which students need to utilize this in-person support to meet their specially designed instruction. The groups would be limited to two hours per day with a maximum of ten students per group as defined by the Oregon Department of Education. Please note- in-person learning will be contingent on the district meeting COVID-19 safety metrics presented by the state. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 numbers and communicate with families on in-person opportunities.
How will speech therapy be handled?
Speech services will be provided virtually during Comprehensive Distance Learning. Your child’s speech provider will contact you to set up a time to meet. If you previously declined services, you may change your mind at any time; just contact your child’s case manager to update your status.
Will IEP meetings be held in-person or virtually?
IEP meetings will continue and will be conducted by phone or Google Meet.
Who can I contact if I have additional questions?
If you have specific requests or concerns about comprehensive distance learning, case managers will be available beginning August 31st. If you need assistance contacting your child’s case manager, please contact Kelsey Petty at 503-842-4414 ext. 1045 or send an email to pettyk@tillamook.k12.or.us.
