Unit 2: Creative Commons and Copyright

Copyright law protects content creators. Virtually everything created is copyrighted.

To legally use copyrighted materials, one must either license content (for example, paying for access to your online textbook from a known publisher), receive permission (ask the creator) or apply Fair Use. Creative Commons licensing is when the content creator grants permission to others to reuse the content. However, there are a variety of Creative Commons licenses.

One of the first steps in selecting OER for remixing and reusing is to discover how they are licensed. All full text content used needs to be licensed with a compatible Creative Commons license to allow ongoing sharing and remixing of the content by other educators. Content that is not one of the compatible Creative Commons licenses or is copyrighted can only be linked.
