For the Children: Lakota Language and Upbringing Experiences

Presented by Harold & Geraldine Condon

Lessons from the Drum: Drumming & Singing Techniques

Presented by Darrell Zephier & Gerald Zephier
Gerald and Darrell Zephier of The Bad Nation Singers will provide beginner to advanced techniques on drumming and singing.

Traditional Astronomy, Lakota Star Knowledge

Presented by Richard Charging Eagle
Star knowledge, constellations, seasons, months, vegetation days, and time.

Exploring the Power of Traditional Knowledge in Science

Presented by Dr. Bree Oatman
Students will engage in a thought-provoking explorative STEM activity on Indigenous knowledge, weaving Oceti Sakowin teachings with modern western science.

Illustrating Legends: Creating Connections

Presented by Donald F. Montileaux
Modern-day storytelling enhances the understanding of Lakota culture. Using art to retell traditional stories allows youth to not only connect with the culture and history but also to look toward a vision of the future with Oceti Sakowin thinking.

Bringing Your Creative Art to Comic Strips

Presented by Mark Mindt, Pony Gulch Productions
Each 15 minutes session would incorporated the use of: Character Development, Storyboarding, Settings, Plot Organization, Conflict/Resolution and Sequential Art. Each participant will have the opportunity to learn new drawing/sketching techniques, simple-to-complex storyboarding and scripting of plot lines and combining the valuable art techniques with writing lessons meant to inform and entertain readers. The outcome within each 15 minute session would be to showcase each artist's characters with an explaination for the stories they've created and will continue to create.

Youth Day Resources

South Dakota schools (located within roughly 100 miles of Huron) are eligible to put in for a travel scholarship to help alleviate some of the bussing expenses to bring students to Youth Day.
