College Counseling Considerations for Native American High School Students

Description

According to the National Center for Education Statistics 2023 report, only 28 percent of Native American 18- to 24-year-olds are attending college compared to 38 percent of the total group. In this session, learn how to integrate culturally responsive college counseling strategies to elevate Native American high school students towards college. Presenter will share how a culturally responsive model was designed to support Native youth on their college bound journey. Participants will identify protective factors to consider in the college planning process with Native youth, utilize those factors into college searches with Native youth, and investigate cultural, college planning resources to integrate into their practice.

As a school counselor since 1999, Kerrie has dedicated her professional journey towards empowering youth and advocating for systemic change and access. Upon acquiring the position of Indian Education school counselor in 2013, she designed a culturally responsive college and career readiness program for Native youth and aligned strategic partnerships to create a Circle of Support around the students. Additionally, in 2021, she started Four Directions Educational Consulting Services and launched CollegeBound Journey, an online platform designed to support Native youth towards culturally supportive colleges and resources.
