Description

In this session, particpants will learn the about the importance of family leadership teams and the value of having authentic family voice within schools.  The session will highlight varying projects across the state and on or near tribal reservations where family leadership teams have been the tools to guide family engagement including but not limited to Native Voice and Family voice. 

Participants will:

Be able to identify the importance of family voice.

Understand what family engagement teams are and how they could function within your school or district.

Learn of how other districts and schools throughout the state are doing their family leadership teams.

Dr. Peg Diekhoff
CFS Family Voice Project Manager

Dr. Peg Diekhoff brings a wealth of experience to BHSSC. In addition to working with Family Voice and related professional development, Peg facilitates training on the DISC Personality Assessment, as well as teaches on-line classes. Peg has spent over 35 years in education; the first 29 as teacher, coach, and school administrator followed by four years as the Project Manager for South Dakota GEAR UP at Black Hills State University. Peg has also served as an Adjunct Professor.Peg was the 2014 Secondary State Assistant Principal of the Year.  While working on the Rosebud Reservation, she was a member of the Educational Equity Group and also served on the Selective Service Local Board. 

Peg has a strong passion for work in the areas of family and student voice, organizational culture, and leadership. She is committed to doing meaningful work for families, communities, and professionals. In her free time, Peg loves spending time with family and friends. She is a sports junkie who loves the NFL and enjoys playing in multiple Fantasy Football Leagues.

Julie King
CFS Learning Specialist

Julie King joined Black Hills Special Services in 2001.  Julie has more than two decades of service to public education in South Dakota, most of which have been as a Licensed Professional School Counselor.  She holds a Master’s of Science in School Counseling from SDSU, and a Bachelor of Arts from Augustana University where she studied Social Work, Psychology, Sociology and Native American Studies. Julie’s experience as a social worker, school counselor, assessment director, coach, and family engagement specialist give her a unique educational perspective. Her expertise lies in the areas of Trauma Informed Education, Student and Teacher Mental Wellness, and Family Engagement.

Julie's life and work philosophy comes from the Dalai Lama: “The task of man is to help others.”  When she’s not at work, you can find Julie at her kids sporting events, or spending time outside in the beautiful Black Hills.
