Description

We know that when schools, families, and communities work together that children do better. In this session, particpants will learn from family engagement experts and stakeholders from across the state on how authentic family engagement is essential for student success.  This panel will be facilitated and will be question and answer style...so bring your questions!

Julie King
CFS Learning Specialist

Julie King joined Black Hills Special Services in 2001.  Julie has more than two decades of service to public education in South Dakota, most of which have been as a Licensed Professional School Counselor.  She holds a Master’s of Science in School Counseling from SDSU, and a Bachelor of Arts from Augustana University where she studied Social Work, Psychology, Sociology and Native American Studies. Julie’s experience as a social worker, school counselor, assessment director, coach, and family engagement specialist give her a unique educational perspective. Her expertise lies in the areas of Trauma Informed Education, Student and Teacher Mental Wellness, and Family Engagement.

Julie's life and work philosophy comes from the Dalai Lama: “The task of man is to help others.”  When she’s not at work, you can find Julie at her kids sporting events, or spending time outside in the beautiful Black Hills.

Tyresha Grey Horse
CFS Learning Specialist

Tyresha Grey Horse is an experienced educator. She comes from a career in Rapid City Area Schools as a 6th grade teacher at North Middle School. Earning her Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Grand Canyon University, she will always love the classroom. Being an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, South Dakota has and always will be home. With two littles in elementary school, she is a passionate stakeholder in public education. 

In her free time, Tyresha enjoys a menagerie of pets at home, including a hedgehog, two cats, a snake and a pet bird. She has a serious love of caffeine and has watched every episode of Judge Judy. She has been happily married to her husband, Maverick, and is patiently waiting to retire so she can be a Beekeeper.
