Welcome back to the final term of Year 2 and Key Stage 1! The children have settled back into routines very well this week. I am looking forward to spending this last term with them and hopefully enjoying some warmer weather too!
A huge well done to all of the children who managed to write their own diaries over Easter! I feel that this was a really successful activity; the children really did try their best, so lots of housepoints were given out! If your child did not have time to complete a diary, they are welcome to do so in the coming weeks instead. Housepoints can be given out when they bring it to school to share.
As readers, we will continue to learn through using our RWI books. When these series are finished we will move on to other texts where the children will continue to practsie their reading fluency. We have also begun to complete written comprehension questions to support our understanding. We always discuss the answers to ensure that everyone has been able to understand the deeper meanings and inferences in the text. Our school library visits will continue every THURSDAY morning, and children can continue to change their classroom book corner books as often as they wish too.

We will be using lots of descriptions to build up suspense , and will introduce our own character later on in the story. Later on in the term we will be writing non-fiction texts about animals and their habitats.

As mathematicians, we will continue our unit on multiplication and division. After this we will be looking at telling the time to 5 minute intervals! You can greatly support your child in this by ensuring that they are confident with their 5 x table facts. Please do practise these regularly whenever you can.

We will be engaged in our whole school competition to find out who can grow the most tomatoes, but we will aslo be conducting experiments to see what happens if we remove the essential ingredients for survival from seeds/plants. After half term we will be learning about living things and their habitats. We will be able to find out more information on this during our visit to Hertfordshire Zoo on Tuesday 7th July! As geographers, we will build on our learning about 'Hot and cold Places' by investigating Zambia in Africa. The children are also using Atlases daily to find out the country in the online game 'Worldle'. In addition they are talking about what they know and can see - how many countries border it, what is the nearest ocean, is it nearer the equator or one of the poles?

As historians, we will will learn about Florence Nightingale. Wewill discover why she is significant and what impact she had on nursing.
As artists, we will be exploring sculpture through the use of clay. We will practise moulding the clay into a pinchpot, as well as learning how to join bits of clay together. We will then design a house tile and will decorate it and adorn it using our own ideas.

As designers, we will be designing our own pouch, and will learn to sew a running stitch to join the fabric parts together!

In Relationship and Health Education, we will be 'Being our Best'. We will be learning how to look after our bodies , how to keep clean and healthy, and even a little basic first aid. After half term we will be learning about 'Growing and Changing'. and will build on our learning in Year 1 about our body being private and just for us.

As learners of religion, this half term we will focus on Islam. We will be learning about what is important in the Islamic faith, and how Muslims celebrate, as well as listening to some important stories. After half term we will repeat this with the Jewish faith.

As musicians, we will be participating in the Year 2 Music Festival at Southmill Arts. This is run every year and is a wonderful occasion where many local schools come together to sing. The performance will take place on Wednesday 24th June. Parents will be invited to attend in the afternoon. More details to follow next week.
As well as learning songs for this event, we will be continuing our music lessons and will listening and appraising classical music, and consolidating what we have learned across the year, including improvisation and compostion.
As athletes, we will be dancing! We will learn our school dance, in anticipation of the May fair, where we will hopefully want to perform it!

We will also be playing games to encourage working together as a team, and of course, preparing for our Sports Day in June!

We continue to encourage more children to read for pleasure. Research shows a positive link between reading frequency and enjoyment and educational attainment. Please continue to support your children by reading with and to them daily and discussing their reading.
