Happy New Year, and welcome back!
This half term we welcome Miss O'Gorman to our class! She will be supporting and teaching until half term. Miss Palmer will return after half-term.
I feel that last half term the children did look after their belongings more and we certainly had a lot less lost property floating around. However, in the coming months of scarves, gloves and hats, please do try to make sure that your child's things are labelled to help us to return lost items to their owners.
As readers, we will continue to learn through using our RWI books. The children are practicing their reading fluency, use of expression, as well as their cpmprehension, through questioning. Children are encouraged to change their book corner books every day, and this term, we will be visiting the school library every THURSDAY morning, to choose and scan a book to borrow from there. Please make sure that your child brings this book back every Thursday, so that they can swap it for another one.

Instead, we enjoyed reading, and writing the introduction to 'Little Red Reading Hood', afterwards, we wrote our own story introduction using our own characters and settings. We also learned about writing questions and in December we wrote questions to our class elf! This half term, we are learning about instructions. We will be following instructions to make dens in the forest and, after making bird feeders, we will write instructions on how to do this for Year 1 and Reception. After half term we will be writing a diary based on the Great Fire of London.

We are also learning to join our handwriting, and the children are doing very well at using this in their independent work.

As mathematicians, we will continue our unit on addition and subtraction and will be learning to add and subtract two 2 digit numbers . As well as using place value equipment, we will also be using money to support our understanding. Using money is a great way to support your child with their maths at home.

After this, we will be learning more about and developing our understanding of, multiplication and division. Again, using coins is a great way to support this learning at home.

On Thursdays, Mrs Kyle will be teaching about measurement including length, height, mass, capacity and temperature! (Last term, the children learnt about 3D shape with Mrs Kyle, which I forgot to include on the newsletter!)
As scientists, we will learn about ‘Growth.’ We will begin by finding out and describing the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival. We will learn how to describe the importance of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food and hygiene.

Later in the term we will be learning about life cycles, including the life cycles of humans, chicken, butterflies and frogs.
As computer scientists, we half term we will be building on our Year 1, and recent computing workshop, to learn more about 'Robot algorithms'. We will use Beebots to find out if the order in which we give the instructions affects the outcome. We will predict where we think a set of instructions will land, and will 'debug' instructions.

After half term, we will be using online charts and pictograms to gather and present data, and will use this to ask and answer questions - a nice link to maths.
As geographers, we will continue to learn about the world, with a focus on 'Hot and cold Places'. We will locate the poles, deserts, and rainforests on maps and globes, as well as learning about which animals and plants are able to survive in these parts of the world.

As historians, we will be learning about the Great Fire of London! As part of this learning, we will be visiting the Monument in London. To enable us to do this trip, we will need 3 adult helpers. The date is likely to be Tuesday 24th March, so please do pencil this in your diaries, and let me know ASAP if you would be able to accompany us.
As artists, we will be exploring colour and mixed media. We will be developing our understanding of texture by using various objects to create texture with colours we have mixed ourselves. This unit will culminate in making our own collages, choosing and using a range of materials for effect.

As designers, we will be designing our own pouch, and will learn to sew a running stitch to join the fabric parts together!

In Relationship and Health Education, we will focus initially on relationships including being a good friend, discussing our feelings and we will talk about 'teasing or bullying?'. We will then focus on valuing and celebrating our differences and will talk about 'what makes us who we are?' We will also learn what to do if someone is feeling left out and strategies for solving problems.

As learners of religion, we will be learning about stories in the religion of Islam. After Christmas we will learn more about Christianity, and the special days in the lead up to Easter.

As musicians, we will be using Glockenspiels to learn to play three notes on an instrument, understanding which is the lowest, middle and highest pitch. We will also learn to recognise the sound of different families of instruments and how each makes its sounds. After half term we will begin to recognise and write music using dots (blobs), sticks & stave notation and will think about how to use dynamics, such as crescendo (getting louder), to add interest to a performance. We will also be taking part in 'World Sing-Up Day',
As athletes, we will continue to work in the hall on our Gymnastics, linking different movements, heights and directions. Please remember your child will need to have shorts in school for these PE sessions. We will be developing what we have learnt about throwing and catching this term and applying it to games involving trying to beat your opponent, and working as a team. After half term we will have our first dance unit of the year, where we will be explorers! We will also start to learn our school dance, in anticipation of the May fair, shortly after the Easter break!

We continue to encourage more children to read for pleasure. Research shows a positive link between reading frequency and enjoyment and educational attainment. Please continue to support your children by reading with and to them daily and discussing their reading.
