In the school year 2019-20 the school library launched a new reading incentive program. The Battle of the Books (short: BOB) is open for students of Grades 3 to 12. In the three age groups Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12, the participants form teams of three students. In these teams they read a number of titles and take part in quiz battles about the books. The most successful team from each age group wins a prize. Throughout the school year there will be more activities and possibilities to win prizes for the teams. Also, by completing BOB activities the teams of Grades 6-12 can earn money for a charity they would like to support.
The books (in English and some titles also in German) are available for loan the school library.
We are very excited to see how many students took part in our Summer Reading Program „A Universe of Stories”! 29 students from EP2 to Grade 6 achieved prizes.
Since this year’s theme was about space, planets, and stars. One of the tasks the students could do was to visit a planetarium during their summer vacation. While many students watched shows at the Zeiss planetarium in Jena, others visited planetariums or space shows in as faraway places as Moscow, San Diego, London, and the observatory in Norderney.
Another task for the students was to create a poster about something connected to the universe theme. The students showed amazing creativity and skill making their posters, for example about space exploration, the solar system, planets, or aliens. All of them are displayed in the school library.
Of course, also reading tasks were part of the summer reading program and the students enjoyed a variety of fiction and non-fiction books during the holidays.
The participants of the summer reading were awarded their prizes on 6th September.
