FAQ:
Q: How does the TTT Letter Board assist with individual communication?
A: The TTT Letter Board utilizes a high-contrast, fully structured block grid containing letters (A, B, C), numbers, expression shortcodes (such as YES/NO), and visual text fields. This configuration assists those who have the cognitive ability to spell but face physical or neurological barriers to verbal speech such as autism, apraxia, stroke, aphasia, TBI, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s.
Q: What's the best way to start for new spellers?
A: The TTT Letter Board has a dedicated Intro mode to ease new spellers into using the app for communication. It can be found in settings under the Board Mode option, and splits the board up into easy chunks for learning.
Q: Where can I learn more about TTT Education & Impact?
A: Visit our website at www.thetelepathytapes.com for more information about our 501(c)(3) nonprofit!
Q: Does the application require an active cellular or Wi-Fi internet connection?
A: No. To preserve complete security, absolute privacy, and total reliability in critical assistive environments, all core spelling, board navigation, and expression functionalities operate completely offline.
Q: How can I download more realistic, higher-quality voices for the TTT Letter Board?
A: The TTT Letter Board uses the native text-to-speech engine built directly into your Apple device. If the default voice sounds a bit robotic, Apple offers incredibly natural, high-quality "Enhanced" and "Premium" voices (including different regional accents and age-appropriate options) that you can download for free.
To find and install new voices on your iPhone or iPad, follow these simple steps:
Open the Settings app on your Apple device.
Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
Tap Spoken Content (on some versions of iOS, this may look like Read & Speak).
Tap Voices, then select your preferred language (e.g., English).
Browse the list of available characters (such as Ava, Samantha, Evan, or Nathan).
Tap on a name to see the different quality levels:
Enhanced / Premium: These sound much more natural and human-like but require a quick download.
Click the Cloud Download icon next to the voice you want. (Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi).
Once downloaded, tap the voice to select it. Close and restart the TTT Letter Board app, and your new voice will be ready to speak!
💡 Pro-Tip for Families: Can I use a custom "Personal Voice"?
Yes! If you are running iOS 17 or newer, Apple allows individuals to create a synthesized replica of their own voice (or a family member's voice) using a feature called Personal Voice.
If you set up a Personal Voice on your device (Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice), it will automatically become available for use as a speech option inside the TTT Letter Board. This is a beautiful way to ensure your speller’s voice feels uniquely theirs.
Q: I am experiencing issues with system sound or audio generation. How can I resolve this?
A: Ensure your device hardware mute/silent toggle switch is disengaged, confirm your primary system media volume slider is sufficiently raised, and verify within your device system settings that the application has been granted permissions to use default text-to-speech engine mechanics.
Q: Can I turn off individual letter voicing?
A: Yes! It's in the settings under 'Say Individual Letters'
Q: Can I have the board voice a word instantly after it's completed?
A: Yes! Turn on this option in the settings under 'Say Word Instantly After Space' and it will voice the word after using the space button.
Q: How do I change fonts?
A: In settings there are 5 fonts to choose from based on user preference, including OpenDyslexic!
Q: Is there a quick and easy way to reset/clear the currently typed word?
A: We understand spellers make mistakes! To reset the currently typed word you can use the Lift-to-Clear motion by raising the board from horizontal to vertical, or just press the backspace key mutiple times. Lift-to-Clear can be toggled on/off in settings as well.
Q: How do I clear all typed text at once?
A: To prevent accidental communication wipes, our Smart Backspace button requires you to press and hold it down for 1 second to clear the board. A quick tap will only delete a single character.
Q: How do I share or use the text that was just spelled outside the app?
A: Simply tap the message bar at the top of the screen. This will bring up a native iOS copy function, allowing you to paste your written text into messages, notes, or other applications.
Q: Are other languages available?Â
A: We currently support English and Spanish (Lat Am.). We look forward to including other languages in the future (but might need some translation help)!
Account Deletion & Data Governance Policies:
Account Deletion: The TTT Letter Board application functions entirely client-side and does not require user account registration, cloud profiles, or external database authentications. Because no private user identifiers or configuration data are ever collected or stored on remote cloud servers, an explicit account deletion mechanism is unnecessary. To completely wipe all local phrase history, visual boards, or configurations, simply uninstall the application natively from your Apple hardware device.
Data Privacy Summary: We believe communication should remain secure and local. The Telepathy Tapes does not capture, analyze, sell, or transmit your individual keystrokes, board clicks, or custom phrases. View our full data privacy information here.
Disclaimer: TTT Letter Board is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tool intended to assist with daily communication. It is not a medical device, nor is it intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. This app should not be used as a replacement for professional medical advice or as a primary method for communicating during medical emergencies.
Q: Why isn't tactile feedback (vibration) working?
A: Tactile feedback is natively supported on iPhone hardware only and is not available on iPads. If you are using an iPhone, make sure "Vibrations" or "Haptics" are enabled in your main iOS system settings.
