Mommy & Me

Classes are taught using the Spanish Immersion model. Participants will meet once a week to explore the language through songs, puppets, movement, and imaginative play. Parents will enrich their child’s environment by learning to incorporate Spanish at home using simple phrases. Take home materials allow for extra practice between classes. Mixed aged classes are developmentally appropriate and allow siblings to enjoy class together.

Pre/Early Readers

The Pre/Early Readers Spanish program is designed for students who are in the beginning stages of building reading and writing skills in English. Students will learn Spanish through songs, movement, hands-on games, group story time, and practical conversational phrases that will build their vocabulary, starting with the basics and advancing. Each vocabulary unit introduces interrelated words and phrases that build on each other, so that students are regularly reviewing previously-learned material and incorporating new words and phrases into what they already know. Our program also includes a literacy development component to promote early reading skills through developmentally appropriate activities. We will focus on letter sound recognition, rhyming patterns, sight words, and tracing and identifying words and short sentences in Spanish. Songs and music-based activities create a foundation for phonemic development, and accompanying posters and practice worksheets, as well as read-aloud story time, support early readers in building sound letter recognition and familiarity with print materials. Research shows that the earlier children are exposed to the sounds of a language, the more likely they are to achieve near-native pronunciation and fluency. Young children are able to acquire the sounds and vocabulary of a new language, even as they progress in speaking and reading their native language.

Once students become fluent readers in English, they will move onto Beginner 1 classes.

Elementary

Our homeschool and afterschool classes offer a small-group learning environment in which students learn Spanish through music, visual aids, practical conversation, high-impact learning games, and targeted letter-recognition and spelling activities. We offer classes for Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Our classes use the award-winning “Risas y Sonrisas Spanish for Kids (Laughter and Smiles)” curriculum, which introduces vocabulary, grammar, and conversational phrases unit by unit in a highly integrated and immersive fashion. The Spanish Class courses include an additional component of phonemic awareness and literacy development through practice activities and games that focus on building vowel and consonant recognition through spelling and reading, as well as gaining familiarity with Spanish sight words (short words that are frequently used in everyday written and spoken Spanish). Students will regularly engage in spelling and writing through in-class journaling and crafting activities, as well as Risas y Sonrisas workbook homework that follows each vocabulary unit.

The small-group environment coupled with multi-modal activities and immersion strategies creates the perfect atmosphere for capturing students’ attention. Our goal is to reach different student learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic), which will allow all students to participate often and of their own will. Students will learn while having fun!

Approaching Fluency & Bilingual

This class is designed for students who have had Spanish immersion exposure either through school or family. There is a heavy emphasis on reading and writing through the use of literature circles.

A Spanish literature circle is a collaborative format in which students will be responsible for reading and discussing Spanish literature. The teacher serves as a model and guide as students engage in critical thinking, vocabulary studies, and reading comprehension tasks. Students will write weekly as a way to reflect and expand on the ideas presented in each book. Grammar lessons will also be incorporated in each class.

Tutoring is also available for students who are currently enrolled in a Spanish course and for homeschoolers who are following an independent study program.

We offer private tutoring for Spanish at all levels, including subject areas for students in Spanish immersion programs.
