GCSE Command Words - what do they mean?
Command Word Meaning
Calculate Work out the answer using numbers provided in the question or case study.
Compare Identify the similarities and/or differences between two or more elements mentioned in the question.
Define State the precise meaning of a specific business term. Usually requires no context.
Describe Give an account of something or link facts, information, events, or processes in a logical order.
Discuss Explore different sides of an issue or situation, setting out both sides of an argument (for and against).
Evaluate Measure the value, success, or importance of something and provide a supported judgment/conclusion based on the evidence and analysis.
Explain Provide a reasoned explanation of how or why something occurs, often using "because", "this means", "therefore", or "as a result" to link ideas.
Give / State Recall or select one or more brief pieces of information or facts. No expansion is typically required.
