A political party is a group of people who have similar ideas about how a country should be run. Each political party decides who its leaders will be. Political parties work hard to get people to support their ideas and vote for them in an election. 

In South Africa, elections are held every five years. In the weeks before the election, the different political parties in South Africa all try to convince the voters in the country to vote for their party.
