A Letter From the Principal
Welcome to The Heritage School.
The Heritage School was founded in 1996 by the New York City Department of Education in collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University. We are a small community high school located in the Julia De Burgos building and nestled in the heart of the vibrant East Harlem community.
We uphold the rich tradition and values of East Harlem by creating a welcoming, caring, and family oriented environment that supports the academic growth and social development of all students who enter our doors.
Students attending The Heritage School will have the opportunity to engage with a rigorous curriculum including four years of Mathematics and Science, Advanced Placement classes, and develop their artistic interests during our extended learning opportunities after school. In addition, through our Restorative Practices rooted advisory structure, students will develop meaningful relationships with each other andtheir teachers while acquiring leadership skills through our Peer Mediation and Circle Keeping programs.
Through our partnerships, students will have the opportunity to participate in 16 Public School Athletic League (PSAL) sports teams, The Heckscher Scholars program, College Now courses offered at Hunter College, SAT preparation, and individualized college and career counseling offered with College Bound Initiative (CBI).
Over the years, we have masterfully leveraged our resources to provide a comprehensive learning experience while preparing students for life after high school and ensuring they are College Ready. If you are interested in a small setting where we truly know our students, I encourage you to schedule a school visit or attend one of our open house sessions.
Thank you,
Dyanand Sugrim, Principal
