Gifted screening assessments results have been released by the district to the schools. We are working now to send reports to families (updated 7/29)
How does The GLOBE Academy support gifted and high-achieving students when in the classroom?
Our school is unique. Dual language immersion provides a built in level of rigor and challenge the minute the students step into the classroom! Therefore, how we support gifted and high achieving students will look different from other Dekalb county schools that do not have dual language immersion as their primary model for teaching.
Your student's classroom teachers already work very hard to differentiate within the classroom for every student. Assessments done in class each year help teachers discern how to group students, how to better differentiate, and how to reach different learning styles. A student who was identified as gifted isn't always necessarily gifted in all areas.
In Kindergarten through fourth grade Mme Datta assists teachers with differentiation as needed by offering resources and ideas.
In fifth through eighth grade Mrs. Libowsky will assist teachers with differentiation as needed by offering resources and ideas.
Collaboration is an important and integral part of teaching at The GLOBE Academy. Ms. Datta (Lower School) and Mrs. Libowsky (Upper School) will work to collaborate and be a support as needed. Some teachers are gifted certified and already have advanced knowledge in supporting advanced learners. Therefore collaboration will vary from class to class.
Building lessons, projects, or units that follow and enrich what the students are already doing will be a primary goal of collaboration as a support for high level learners.
We will work toward goal setting in terms of social and emotional learning for students who may struggle in specific areas.
Please keep in mind that differentiation begins with each lead classroom teacher and will then be further supported by Ms. Datta (Lower School) and Ms. Libowsky (Upper School) based on the needs of each teacher.
Kindergarten
Students in these grades will receive differentiated instruction within their classrooms, with Mme Datta collaborating closely with teachers to provide resources and guidance as needed.
1st to 5th grades
This year, Ms. Datta will have her own classroom in the S Modular. Gifted students in grades 1–5 will attend gifted education classes every other day for 40 minutes. During these sessions, students will be exposed to a variety of engaging activities designed to challenge their thinking and encourage them to explore their individual interests and strengths.
As the year progresses, students will have opportunities to develop projects based on their own goals, ideas, and areas of interest. Our goal is to provide an environment where gifted learners feel challenged, supported, curious, and excited to learn while continuing to grow and thrive.
Middle School
Students in these grades will receive differentiation within each individual class and through the WIN block as needed. Students will participate in a time called the WIN (What I Need) block. During this time, gifted identified students will receive additional instruction from Ms. Libowsky. Instruction will include interdisciplinary activities that aim to meet the strengths and interests of all students. Ms. Libowsky will collaborate with teachers and check in with students to ensure that they are being challenged and supported through their middle school experiences here at GLOBE.
