Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect in Vermont

As a mandated reporter in Vermont, you are legally obligated to report any suspected child abuse or neglect to the Department for Children and Families (DCF)'s Family Services Division within 24 hours.

If a child is in immediate danger, always call 911 or your local police first, and then follow up with a report to DCF.

Your Legal Duty

If you have a reasonable suspicion of child abuse or neglect, you must make a report within 24 hours of when you first noticed the signs or received information about it.

How to Make a Report

To report suspected child abuse or neglect, call 1-800-649-5285. This line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Before you call, try to gather as much information as you can. When you speak with a social worker, they will:

• Ask you detailed questions about the situation.

• Document the information you provide.

• Request that you submit a written report.

• Potentially ask you to gather additional information if necessary.

Submitting a Written Report

After your call, you'll need to submit a written report:

1. Download Form FS-305 to your computer.

2. Complete the form electronically or by hand.
