Audubon has been enhancing environmental learning at Commodore for preK to 5th grade students for many years. This important partnership anchors environmental studies for the elementary grades. They support science education with hands-on outdoor field work in Patterson Park three times a year and come into classrooms to help students apply their learning in new situations. Even during COVID interruptions, they have been able to offering virtual programming to Commodore students.
Great Kids Farm has consistently hosted our students for field trips in order to expand their understanding of healthy food, planting, decomposers and much more. Additionally they have consulted with staff members regarding the school garden and are working on a model lesson regarding pollinators for the advisory group that is spearheading the garden this school year. The pictures below are from a 2nd grade field trip in 2018 and 2021.
Days of Taste and Great Kids Farm brought healthy food and nutrition programming to our 4th grade students beginning in October of 2019 and continuing each year through current.
B. Willow collaborated with 2nd grade students to do a succulent and plant workshop to build terrariums. Each student took their terrarium home. Thank you B. Willow!
BUGS has been a consistent Commodore partner offering both in person and virtual after school programming. They use cooking, gardening, STEM and creative arts to engage 2nd-5th grade students outside of the school day. Each year the program culminates with a Farmers Market where students sell their eggs, seeding and projects they have been working on and growing throughout the school year. The bags of greens and eggs were grown by BUGS students and donated to the Commodore food pantry in 2020.
Northbay has been an important and stable partner that assists Commodore in teaching environmental science and giving students hands on experiences. When field trips have been permitted 90 6th grade students and 85 7th grade students participate in weeklong end of year trips. During these weeks, student learn about habitat restoration, plant identification and erosion in the Chesapeake Bay. The photos below are from May 2018 7th grade trip. During the 2020-2021 school year, Commodore had a unique partnership with Northbay called Northbay Academy. During the time students were at home learning virtually a cohort of 24 students carried out their virtual learning from Northbay. After class they were then able to participate in further environmental studies and team building.
Mr. Carey, one of our middle school science teacher has operated the Terrapins in the Classroom partnership for many years. Students helped raise, care for and measure a terrapin in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. In the spring they release the terrapins back to their natural environments on Poplar Island.
In December of 2021, Commodore was able to pick up 600 reusable bags to supply to our food pantry and distribute into the community. This effort aligns with student actions related to implementing the Bag Ban in Baltimore City.
