Transition Day for Students: This will take place on Tuesday 1 July and is the perfect way for students to get a feel for life at The Beacon School. Students will meet their form tutors and classmates in preparation for September. They will participate in a wide selection of activities from team building and a treasure hunt around the school, to subject-taster sessions in Science, Art, DT, Drama and English. Students will even have the opportunity to win Proud Points for their house.
Our aim is that students finish the transition day full of excitement for September. However, we also understand that some students may be anxious about moving to secondary school. To ensure that each child is aware of how and where to seek help at The Beacon School we introduce our Year 11 mentors, we also give lots of time for our future Year 7s to get to know their tutor team and some friendly faces around the school.
Transition Evening for Parents and Carers: This will take place on Tuesday 1 July at 6 pm and will provide you with the relevant information and expectations for the new academic year. The evening will consist of presentations from the Headteacher, Mr Grant Duff and the Head of Year. The evening is for the benefit of the parents/carers so we ask that students do not attend.
Student Summer School for 2025 entry the Year 6-7 transition summer school will be on the 21st July 2025. This day provides students with a second opportunity to meet their new form groups and orientate themselves with the school and staff.
YEAR 7 LIFE
THE FIRST DAY
Term starts on Tuesday 2 September and is an exciting day for staff, students and the families of Year 7s. Students will begin the day with tutor time and have their first assembly. They will spend time getting to know their Form Tutor and classmates and learning about the school values, expectations and policies that they will be expected to follow. Students will also receive their timetables and visit the Bistro to get their biometric fingerprints taken so they can purchase food via ParentPay.
THE TUTOR TEAM
The Form Tutor is the most important point of contact for you and your child. They are responsible for the pastoral care of your child and ensuring that they are equipped and ready for the school day. They also deliver our Active Tutorial programme and can answer any questions or concerns that you or your child may have.
Tutor time is once a day, either before or after lunch and provides students with an important routine to ensure they are learning-ready. During their daily tutor time, Form Tutors will check that students have the correct uniform and equipment, work through our Active Tutorial programme and hand out important notices and messages.
Form tutors are overseen by the Head and Deputy Head of Year 7.
ACTIVE TUTORIAL AND TUTOR TIME
The majority of tutor time each day is dedicated to following our Active Tutorial programme. Students receive a broad and varied curriculum of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), as well as exploring wider social topics. We make sure to celebrate key dates and holidays and support students in exploring topics such as wellbeing, resilience and diversity.
Tutor time is also a time when students compete in House competitions, complete silent reading, attend assemblies and enrich their school experience with community projects. It is also the time when they can check in with their form tutor about any worries or concerns.

SOCIAL TIME
Break time: Students can use this time to have a snack, visit the toilet, refill water bottles, print any homework they have completed, meet with friends or speak to a member of staff. During this time they can also socialise with the wider school community and catch up with friends from other classes or year groups.
There is a choice of hot/cold food and beverages available in the Bistro, or students can visit The Hatch for some grab-and-go food. We have plenty of areas for students to use (both covered and uncovered), as well as seating inside the Bistro.
Lunchtime: The Bistro continues to serve food and students can purchase a healthy and filling meal or a cold snack. As well as the benefits available at break time, students may use their lunchtime to take part in a range of clubs and activities as well as House events.
If it rains during break or lunch, indoor spaces are allocated so that students can enjoy their break and socialise.
