“Music as a means to bring people together”
For the last 20 years the “Saitenschiff” has made and repaired instruments for local schools while serving as safe-space for those with mental disabilities. The city-run non-profit offers integrative and rehabilitative jobs for those with impairments, substance abuse issues and other mental impediments. Without external pressure and handicap-oriented performance requirements, employees are able to integrate themselves back into daily life, can establish social contacts and gain more self-confidence through paid work.
Salvaging musical instruments such as Guitars, Violins, Percussions and Xylophones they serve over 180 schools, daycare / after-school centers and music schools. A resource-saving, sustainable and meaningful approach towards the stabilization of society’s most vulnerable.
Volunteering for a span of two weeks, my Internship at the “Saitenschiff” was transformative. Not merely regarding the craft of instrument building and repairing, rather also in heightening my perception of important social issues and how we can come together to meaningfully address them. Getting to know and work with those so often disregarded was revealing, each and every one of them unique people with their own personal interests, hobbies, stories...
No-one is inherently disabled, rather it is their environment which handicaps them. It is our job as designers to not merely design alternative solutions, rather to construe entire alternative, inclusive and socially-just societies.

Project Description
More Than Charms is a Kuwait-based store founded in 2016. With More Than Charms, the general standard always has an eccentric twist, one that is easily recognizable when glanced at from a distance. The source of our designs is not an element of nature or a walk down history lane, it’s simply our designer’s vision of jewelry making. Each and every piece is designed with a mindset of how to make this piece truly a noteworthy one, they are made special by our designers’ young touches and raw details. Different shapes and diverse elements are constantly involved in our designs capturing the true expressions of our designer’s vision. As she took a break, she is coming with back and more. Hopefully with every new season, our designs will continue to represent infinite options and unpredictable twists, just like our designers. (Juori AlMarzouq, BArch)
As being the founder of this home business, I faced many challenges across the way. It is impossible not to, as this home business started from nothing to something behind the eyes of one person. Before I opened the book “How to start a business” I allowed myself to discover having the skills of a designer, creator, businesswoman, financer, all in one when I was only 15. I had to manage to find time in my school day, packing orders and sending them away with love giving attention also to its manufactured process. What I learned from all this, is that great potential never ends, it’s a growing process as long as your designer eyes are wide open to new learnings (Juori AlMarzouq, BArch).
This experience tested my limits when it comes to creativity. I always had a different vision when I was challenged with creativity, whether it was the design process, manufacture, or packaging. Thus, this is why I had the aim of creating something that never was in the local market. I have always had the urge to expose myself to a design world, which is something i opened my eyes to. Through all those design experiences I’ve been, I see the world differently. I have to comment on anything design related, because it’s all I have ever known (Juori AlMarzouq, BArch).

Overdone proportions and extreme heights have always caught my eye, and to be one of those who may design any in the future encourages me to pursue this degree. This isn’t my only reason as to why I want to pursue this career, many benefits come within. It’s a mind I’m educating, an eye I’m opening, language I’m expressing, etc. On the other hand, this includes many services to serve the world, and I would like to make a change specifically back home, then expand within.
Researching and being introduced to the firms to get an idea of what I want to grow from within me, is my step wish to pursue between now and my next practice assessment. I would like to also experience serving services to the world, in every aspect to understand what services I enjoy providing and those I qualify in (Juori AlMarzooq, BArch).
