An introduction to the Travel and Tourism industry gives students a head start in the qualifications that will lead to employment in New Zealand’s fastest growth sector. A focus is on basic skills that are essential to a career in Travel and Tourism including communication, teamwork and mathematics. There are opportunities to learn about future career pathways throughout the year via guest speakers and also from short courses that are on offer.
In Tourism we offer 30 credits at Level 2 and 37 credits at Level 3 for a total of 67 credits over the course of two years. All of the standards completed are unit standards. If students achieve 50 credits during their two years doing tourism then they receive the New Zealand Certificate in Tourism which can be used as an entryway certificate into the tourism job market.
Taking Tourism at school allows students to get a taster of just how accessible and exciting the Tourism industry is. Guest speakers come in regularly to promote the subject and explain what direction a career in Tourism can lead to.
Tourism is offered from Years 12-13.
In Level 2 there are ten standards taught throughout the year. These include topics about the impacts of tourism on areas as well as how tourism businesses operate. All standards are taught internally and all are unit standards.
In Level 3 there are five standards that are taught throughout the year with the possibility of two optional standards. These range from learning about Pacific Islands to world Geography and the economic impacts of tourism as well as looking at tourism in New Zealand.
