The study of the people, places, and events of the classical world and how they influence the modern world. Classical Studies is an interdisciplinary subject: students engage with literature, languages, art, history, science, technology, religion, and philosophy.
Students explore community, cultural identity, values, and perspectives and think critically about human behaviour and relationships to appreciate the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, understand the past and the present, and to imagine possible futures.
Classical Studies is offered from Years 12-13.
In Level 2 Classical Studies, students look at the world of Ancient Greece including Greek Art and Architecture. From the gods on Mt Olympus, The Battle of Salamis to Athens’ Acropolis and Parthenon to Homer’s Odyssey. All of these topics are examined in order to understand Greek culture, religion and everyday life.
In Level 3 Classical Studies, students will study the campaigns of Alexander the Great, examining his cultural and military influence on the ancient world and also Roman Imperial Art, looking at the propaganda value of art and architecture and how cultures were later influenced by this art.
Level 2 and 3 Classicists will have the opportunity to attend lectures offered by Massey University on a range of Classical Studies subjects. This gives students a great taste of what to expect if they were to continue their studies at the tertiary level.
