TGen North Clinical Laboratory (TNCL) is a CLIA-certified, high complexity clinical laboratory located in Flagstaff, Arizona. TNCL was established at TGen North, the home of TGen's Pathogen and Microbiome Division. Led by Dr. David Engelthaler, TGen North focuses on diagnostic, analytic, forensic, ecologic, and epidemiologic research of microbes that are of interest to medicine, public health, and biodefense. Alongside private, state, and federal organizations, we bring experience and expertise in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our clinical laboratory began testing respiratory samples for SARS-CoV-2 in March 2020. Since then, we have provided COVID-19 testing support to public health, tribal communities, healthcare facilities, detention centers, behavioral health patients, long-term care and rehabilitation residents, first responders, healthcare workers, and more.
In addition to clinical testing, TGen has a variety of screening and genomic epidemiological programs. TNCL performs whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis on positive cases in Arizona to better understand genetic similarities and diversity among cases and to characterize the spread of COVID-19.
Our clinical laboratory offers PCR and serology testing for COVID-19:
TGen's SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Assay is a real-time, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) assay designed to detect the virus that causes COVID-19 in respiratory specimens (such as nasopharyngeal swabs and saliva specimens) collected from individuals suspected of being infected or exposed.
We use the InBios SCoV-2 Detect IgG ELISA Diagnostic Test to identify the presence of antibodies against COVID-19 in blood specimens collected from individuals suspected of being previously infected/exposed to the virus or to determine vaccination status.
Additional details can be found on the Virology and Serology Testing pages.

TGen has a 15-year history of using genomics to solve disease outbreaks locally, nationally, and around the world. We have helped CDC and other federal agencies develop a national framework for genomic surveillance for food-borne and other outbreaks. Currently, we are using our sequencing expertise to understand the spread and characteristics of the COVID-19 pandemic in Arizona.
Additional details can be found on the Genomic Sequencing page.
Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 am-5 pm. We do not operate on weekends or major federal holidays. Samples received on Friday may not be run until the following Monday.
Our results turnaround time is 24-48 hours.
Laboratory results can be returned via secure email, fax, or our patient portal. Other options, including an electronic interface, can be discussed with TGen support staff.
If needed, we can supply nasopharyngeal swab and saliva kits to partners at an additional cost.
We follow Communicable Disease Reporting requirements for Federal and State Public Health Agencies and will report all laboratory results to the appropriate entity.
We have CLIA licensure to accept samples from every state in the U.S. except Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York.
