Following my first visit last year, I returned to Tainan for a two-week residency at Texture Printmaking Studio to continue my technical research.
Working in an unfamiliar studio is always full of new encounters and discoveries. For me, one of the most valuable experiences as both an artist and a researcher is meeting people and communicating through the shared language of art and printmaking, beyond differences in nationality or background.
During this residency, I focused on research into less-toxic lithography processes, test printing with Goang Xing Paper, and lithographic experiments at the Printmaking Center of National Kaohsiung Normal University.
Although I work as a technical instructor at both a university and a museum printmaking studio in Japan, many of the experiments I hope to pursue are difficult to undertake alone. Collaborating with the members of Texture Printmaking Studio and the wider printmaking community allowed me to exchange ideas, deepen my research, and gain many valuable insights.
Although this residency lasted only two weeks, I feel that it marks the beginning of a much longer research journey. This experience gave me not only new technical knowledge, but also meaningful friendships, inspiring conversations, and a renewed perspective on collaborative research.
My heartfelt thanks to Texture Printmaking Studio, Professor Kao and everyone at National Kaohsiung Normal University, Goang Xing Paper Mill, and all the people I had the pleasure of meeting during this residency. I am deeply grateful for your generosity, knowledge, and support, and I sincerely hope we can continue developing this research together in the future.
I look forward to returning to Taiwan again.
See you again soon, and thank you so much!

This year, Shu-Yu, who recently received the Next Art Tainan Award, seems to share a special connection with Tainan. Earlier this month, we invited her to join Laure for an artist talk, and at the end of this month, we are welcoming her back for a residency.
Shu-Yu’s practice spans across many different media. For this residency, we hope to return to her beginnings—revisiting and exploring the many possibilities of printmaking as a medium.
We’re looking forward to Shu-Yu’s coming, we will sharing and updates her life in Tainan as well.

To know a city, begin with its roads.
I live in Bali (New Taipei City) , where the land stretches narrowly along the riverbank, and essentially there is only one road running from beginning to end. Since university, I’ve come to know the streets of Taipei well — from north to south, east to west, the grid-like road names gradually became familiar to me.
Tainan is not an unfamiliar city, yet no matter how many times I’ve visited, I can never quite remember its streets. I’ve heard that parts of the land were once inland sea, and many of the roads used to be canals. The ground beneath our feet is perhaps not as solid or eternal as it seems.
Through this residency, I hope to remember these roads, and to discover traces of their past.

Tainan’s West Central District is a remarkably rich old town. Before, I had always moved through the city with a destination in mind. This was the first time I had stayed here long enough simply to wander. Besides intentionally tracing the city’s former waterways, city walls, and street layouts through historical records, what I enjoyed most was actually the scale of the old town itself—I could reach almost anywhere on foot.
Walking gave me a completely different sense of distance and time, and a different awareness of my own body in space. There was a feeling of spending time without worrying about efficiency. During the last few days, I started riding a bicycle in order to move around more “efficiently.” That only confirmed my feeling that walking is the truest way for me to understand distance and time through the body.
Although I came to understand much more about the city’s past and present, and visited countless stone monuments, historic sites, temples, and ruins, my time in the residency was still too short for these experiences to become something else. So I found a way to verify my walking through the act itself: drypoint sketches on acrylic plates.
As a European artist with background in both architecture and art, I have long explored the relationships between space, built environments, and sociopolitical structures. Through photography, collage, and artist books, I deconstruct and reconfigure space. During the residency, I will extend these reflections to study the heterogeneous and collage-like nature of Tainan's urban identity, with the aim of developing new works through engraving.

Today marks Laure’s check-out day from the studio. Somehow, these three months passed by incredibly fast.
When Laure first arrived, she had no prior experience with printmaking. Together, we explored different techniques before eventually settling on intaglio as the main direction for her work.
During the residency, we organized an exhibition and two public talks at the Tainan Public Library (New Main Library), an artist talk at Taipei National University of the Arts, and a workshop at the Tainan Art Museum. Before leaving, she also visited @LOTOS to experiment with new materials and collaborated with our assistant, @wu999188, on an artist book project.
What I admire most about Laure is her passion for creation. Even when the process feels uncertain, she approaches it with curiosity and joy, turning experimentation itself into something playful and alive.
Thank you, Laure, for everything you brought with you during these months. We hope to meet again someday, with even more ideas to share.

During this short return to Taiwan, I spent four days in residence at Texture Printmaking Studio. Although the residency was brief, looking back, I realized that those few days had a much deeper impact on me than I had expected.
Two years ago, while doing archival research at Tate Britain, I came across an exhibition invitation card marked “Atelier 17.” That moment led me into a longer investigation into printmaking history. The research gradually changed the way I understood printmaking and, through that process of searching and reading, eventually brought me to Texture Printmaking Studio in Tainan.
Founded by Stanley William Hayter in 1927, Atelier 17 became an important center in the development of twentieth-century modern printmaking. Art historian Christina Weyl has pointed out that many techniques later associated with Hayter were in fact gradually developed through collective experimentation and exchange within the studio. This made me reconsider printmaking not simply as the technique of an individual artist, but as a practice shaped through collaboration, testing, transmission, and sharing.
At Texture, I encountered this collective nature of printmaking again. From Pei-Hsuan’s technical research with different artists to the discussions, demonstrations, and exchanges among studio members, printmaking knowledge does not remain fixed. It continues to be reinterpreted and developed through the experiences of different people. Surprisingly, many of the conversations I had during those few days also became important references for my doctoral research and for reconsidering my own position as a practitioner.
During the residency, I began asking myself a question I had rarely considered seriously before: What does printmaking mean to me?
From the perspective of an illustrator, I am drawn to the unpredictability of printmaking. It allows my commercial work to retain traces of individuality and a small sense of rebellion. In an increasingly digital world, where images can now be generated instantly through AI, printmaking also offers a way to preserve the physical presence of materials, touch, and the human body in the making process.
From the perspective of an art educator, printmaking carries a rich cultural and historical background. It repeatedly reminds me that printing has always been closely connected to communication, collective participation, and the construction of culture.
The residency accommodation was filled with books, and I happened to pick up one about postcards and the history of communication. It discussed how the development of printing technologies has always been closely tied to the transmission of information. A postcard gains meaning not simply because it has been printed, but because it is written on, sent, received, and marked by different people along the way. Each person may read it from a different perspective, and together those perspectives generate new layers of narrative.
This also helped me rethink the meaning of the residency itself.
Perhaps an artist residency is not simply about leaving behind an artwork at the end. It is also about allowing one’s own perspective to enter into the existing knowledge, relationships, and culture of a place. My background in illustration and art education became one part of Texture’s residency culture, while Texture’s technical knowledge, conversations, and collective practice, in turn, changed the way I look at printmaking.
Four days may be short, but this experience feels much more like a beginning than an ending.
Excerpted and edited from Louise’s Instagram posts on her Texture Printmaking Studio Residency Programme 2025.

Hello! I’m Cara, I’m a PhD candidate researching decolonial theory, map-making practices, and sustainable development. I initially studied printmaking when I was a bachelor’s student. My work focuses on the migrant experience, place, and modernity. I first came to Texture Printmaking Studio in 2020 while I was doing my Fulbright Fellowship obtaining my Master’s in Creative Industry Design at National Cheng Kung University.
After focusing on my academic career it was hard to find the time to make art so I decided to come back to texture for a few weeks especially because I missed printmaking. I find having a dual art and research practice is important to keep the mind creative and flexible. Doing research means spending countless hours reading and writing, so it’s nice to make prints as a creative way of processing academic content and doing something away from the computer screen.
It’s always lovely printing in Tainan and the mix of old and new cultural elements around the city is always inspiring. I'm hoping to spend the next few weeks making an edition. of a new print .

In 2023, Taiwan's professional ink manufacturer, Yung Liang Printing Supplies Co., Ltd. (referred to as Yung Liang Company), launched a brand new packaging and three series of inks designed specifically for printmaking: [Standard Color Series], [American Standard Color Series], and [Fluorescent Color Series], totaling 25 colors, providing printmaking artists with more color choices. Texture sincerely invites Yung Liang Company to join the "Texture Printmaking Studio Residency Program," providing a variety of colors for domestic and international artists, sparking more creative possibilities, and expecting to establish equal and mutually beneficial domestic and international art talent exchange and residency programs.
In our first collaboration with Yung Liang, the first artist we are inviting is "#Ya-Lan_Yu." Choosing Ya-Lan as our collaborating artist has multiple reasons. Not only are her artworks rich and vibrant in color, but she also holds a special place as our first Taiwanese artist in residence in 2017 when our studio first started. Seven years later, we are inviting her to the studio again, and we feel that it's an opportunity to review each other's progress. We look forward to expecting more sparks to fly during this one-and-a-half-month period :)

The residency continues the experience of flexo plate technology in Zygote residency in Cleveland, USA in 2019, and this year, we will carry out technology and material exchange in Texture Studio and assist in the space allocation of this type of plate. In order to cope with the changes in the type of use, the exchange of plates was changed to ToyoboM95 series from Japan, and two materials were developed by Mr. Yang Mingdian. Due to the sensitivity of flexo plates to light, the program and the conditions of the drawings vary greatly, so it is necessary to repeat experiments and fine-tune them by combining the experience of light-sensitive materials in the past, and the members of the studio had various dialogues, trying to catch the balance of the material, creation, and life, and to find a “sweet spot” in the material. sweet spot” in material, creation and life.

In our residency program introduction, we wrote:
Taiwan’s “Father of Modern Printmaking,” Liao Shiou-Ping, once said:
“Everything has its own expertise; there is always a gap between theory and practice. If you don’t understand something, seek advice from those with firsthand experience—you will always learn unique skills.”
Inspired by these words, we began inviting artists for short-term residencies in 2017, further enriching the exchange of knowledge and emotions.
This idea was fully embodied in lee, Jr-Yun’s recent residency.
Photopolymer plates—a type of light-sensitive resin plate—are widely used as a commercial printing material and have become increasingly popular in digital platemaking in recent years. However, due to high import costs, I have had limited exposure to this medium, leaving many aspects unfamiliar to me.
Through her residency, Jr-Yun helped us test and refine the setup for photopolymer plate production. From relief to intaglio printing, it felt like an intensive and comprehensive course on photopolymer techniques. I believe that through these residencies, we are not only exchanging techniques and knowledge but also building deeper emotional connections.
Thank you, Jr-Yun
Based in Taipei, focusing on printmaking as a core medium to explore the interrelations among image, memory, and materiality. Early works in intaglio printmaking constructed imaginative and symbolic landscapes. Recent projects employ experimental techniques such as paper lithography, examining the fluidity and uncertainty of reconstructed memories through blurring, displacement, and layering. Often beginning with fragments of daily life, travel impressions, or local scenery, images are translated through the material qualities of printmaking to evoke collective memory.

At the end of the winter break, I came to Tainan for a short printmaking residency. Although the residency lasted only four days, it was a valuable opportunity to recharge and return to my creative practice.
Texture Printmaking Studio is equipped for a wide range of printmaking techniques, while the second floor provides a living space for resident artists. Each morning, I could simply get ready, walk nearby to pick up some food, and return to the studio to spend the entire day immersed in making. Even after working late into the evening, I only needed to go upstairs, wash up, and rest.
This way of living and working reminded me of my residency in Akiruno many years ago, where everyday life and artistic practice were also closely intertwined. The studio is comfortable and pleasant—the main difference may be that Texture is located in such a convenient area, surrounded by far too many good things to eat.
Whether you are already a printmaker or simply interested in exploring print-based ways of making art, Texture is a wonderful place to spend some time.

Today marks Yi-Ting’s last day at the studio.
In collaboration with Bamboo Curtain Studio @bcs_tw, we invited Yi-Ting, an artist whose practice is not rooted in printmaking, to join us for a residency. For us, this was also a new and unfamiliar challenge.
We began by introducing different printmaking processes, selecting techniques that might best suit her work, discussing possible directions, and experimenting with different materials. Throughout the residency, we did our best to become her “printmaking support team,” helping translate the landscape she imagined into print.
Time passed incredibly quickly, and two months were gone before we knew it. We had grown accustomed to always having someone working in the studio, so the sudden quiet feels a little strange.
From barely knowing one another at the beginning to working together every day, the emotional connections that emerge through these daily interactions become especially clear at the moment when it is finally time to wave goodbye.

Tomomi Ono was invited to participate in this residency with a focus on the exchange of contemporary lithographic materials and techniques. She introduced materials currently used in the United States for Polyester Plate Lithography and Century Plate Lithography. During the residency, she conducted material testing and technical exchanges, shared her experience with Taiwanese artists through a workshop, and worked with Texture to explore the practical application of these materials within the studio environment.
Today, while Tomomi and I were walking to pick up a few things, we started talking about how long we’ve actually known each other. I first met Tomomi five years ago, when I (the boss!) went to New York for further study. Although I stayed in New York for a year, I only spent four months in the printmaking studio.
Tomomi said she had always thought it was four years—probably because I was there almost every single day. No wonder it felt like we had known each other for such a long time, when in fact, it was only four months.
Tomorrow, Tomomi will be leaving us. These two short weeks have gone by incredibly fast, yet somehow they also feel as long as a lifetime. The last night is always a little sentimental. I’m truly grateful to #tomomi for all her generous and selfless help! In just two weeks, I feel like my lithography experience has leveled up tremendously ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ And in these same two short weeks, I think we’ve become friends for life. Today, Tomomi reunited with a friend she met 28 years ago. After traveling around Spain together, they never saw each other again—until today. Seeing that touching reunion, I hope the same thing can happen for us next year. Hopefully we won’t have to wait another 28 years. :)
