Magnitude - a number that represents the strength of a force.
Mass - amount of matter (like atoms and molecules) that makes up an object.
Mass extinction - an event where most of life on Earth disappears at the same period of time.
Matter - Anything that has mass and takes up space
Meiosis - A type of cell division that produces sex cells (sperm and egg cells). 4 unique haploid cells are produced at the end.
Melting - A physical change in which a substance changes from solid to liquid.
Messenger RNA - A type of nucleic acid that is created by a strand of DNA. It carries the code for making a protein to the ribosome.
Metal – an element or substance that is a good conductor of heat and electricity.
Metalloid – an element that has some properties of a metal and some properties of a nonmetal.
Meter stick - A measuring stick, It is one meter long, and It's also marked in centimeters and millimeters
Metric ruler - a tool for measuring length using the metric system. It's marked in centimeters (cm) and millimeters (mm), where 1 cm equals 10 mm. To use it, line up one end of an object with the zero (0) mark on the ruler. The numbers show the centimeters, and the smaller lines between the numbers show the millimeters.
Metric System - a way of measuring things like length, weight, and volume using units based on the number 10, such as meters for length, grams for weight, and liters for volume.
Mitosis - The process in the cell cycle in which the cell grows, DNA makes a copy of itself and the cell prepares to divide into two identical diploid daughter cells.
Molecule - the smallest unit of a substance that has all of that substance's chemical and physical properties.
Momentum - the force of an object in motion due to its mass and velocity
Monomers - a small, single molecule that can be joined together with other similar molecules to form a larger, more complex molecule called a polymer
Neap Tide - A tidal period when the Earth, Moon and Sun make a 90 degree angle. This causes the lowest high tides and the highest low tides.
Net force - the combination of all of the forces acting on an object.
Neutron - A subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom that has no charge, it is electrically neutral. A neutron has a mass of 1 amu (atomic mass unit).
New Moon - A lunar phase in which the entire surface of the Moon that is facing the Earth is in darkness.
Newton - The standard unit of measuring force.
Nonmetal – an element that does not conduct electricity or heat and is usually a gas at room temperature.
Non-renewable Resources - Energy resources that cannot be replaced within a human’s lifetime. These are resources like coal, oil or natural gas.
Nuclear Energy - Energy released within the nucleus of an atom. The two types are fusion, which joins atoms together and fission, which splits atoms apart.
Nucleic Acids - An organic molecule made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur. They help to store and transmit genetic material within a living organism. They serve as the instructions for cells to function.
Nucleotide - The building blocks of nucleic acids. They are made of a sugar molecule, a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base.
