Well 2019 was not our year it seems and for the first time in seven years, TES narrowly slips outside of the Top 3, despite the children’s best efforts - and that is not in question! The weekend included those small margins where things didn't quite go our way, but that’s sport!

Mixed Athletics-2nd

TES got off to a great start once again! Athletics has proven to be a strength in recent years, as we consistently churn out great results in both track and field- this year was no different.

The boys had a good day overall. There were some great performances during the field events, with numerous top 10 finishes from both our A and B athletes. Rakan had an excellent triple jump, and we were hopeful he would finish in the top three. Unfortunately, someone must have competed after him and so we await final confirmation of where exactly he finished up- it is most certainly in the top 5! Andrew also did very well in the B competition, and followed this up with a pleasing performance in the shot put. Sam and Hamza jumped very well in their long jump competitions, picking up good points for the team. Sam's javelin was also very good, as was Tristan in the B competition. We are confident that each of these boys finished inside the top 5 in their respective A and B competitions.

Taylor had a brilliant day overall, qualifying for the Boys 75m A final, narrowly missing out by the skin of his teeth on the bronze medal, as he claimed an excellent fourth place. Earlier in the day, he also performed really well in the shot put, again we are confident he has secured a top half finish in his A competition. The relay team ran well, but unfortunately made one mistake too many on their changeovers. Had these been as slick as I know they can be, they would have qualified for the final- but, we live and learn.

A positive day for the boys, who really did give it their all against tough competition!

Onto the girls....

I mean, where do I start?

Out of 10 track and field events combined, we came first in 7! Champions in 70% of the events really is quite outstanding, and possibly, the best performance given by any group of boys or girls in a BSME U11 campaign.

On the track, we completely blitzed the field! We won 80% of the track events- 75m, 300m, 600m and the relay. On top of this, we scored maximum points in all of these events, with our A and B athletes winning their categories.

The blonde duo of Erin and Filippa who had the monumental task of running the 300m and 600m races, managed to not only win the A and B competition, but secure Gold and Silver respectively, out of 28 competitors in both events- WOW! Nunu and Maja both managed to win their 75m finals, to earn maximum points, as Nunu was also crowned champion- and by a good 5-7 metres! Nunu, Maja, Filippa and Erin, also went on to win gold in the 4x100m relay! What a day these four girls had on the track. And as if two golds were enough, Nunu then went on to win the Long and Triple Jump by considerable margins! Melanie also had a top 3 finish in her triple jump B competition, and managed a good win in her 150m heat, to place her in the top 5 in the B competition on the track. With three golds to her name, Filippa also tried to secure another medal in the long jump, but fell just short against three A competitors- she still won the B competition though so yet another event where the girls secured maximum points!

Isabella had a brilliant day in her field events as well, as she fought off tough competition in the high jump, to secure a silver medal. She followed this up with a bronze medal in the shot put, only just missing out on gold! Natalie also secured a top 5 finish in her B competition- where exactly? I still don't know. And last, but my no means least, Orla pulled off a massive win with her final throw of the javelin, to secure gold in this event as well! Joud also finished strongly, and we suspect finished in the top 3 in her B competition!

Boys Basketball- 9th

Well it wasn't the result we wanted, but in sport, sometimes lady luck just isn't on your side! It wasn't through a lack of trying today, but just one too many errors which cost the boys wins in the end.

The day started off with a tough fixture, against the eventual winners SCS. The boys worked extremely hard from start to finish, particularly in the final 5 minutes, where they came from 5-2 down, to lead 6-5, and then in the last second of the game, concede a basket to lose 7-6- gutting!

The second game was much better, as they won 4-1 against DBS. Against HIS, the boys just made one too many mistakes. HIS only managed to score one basket though, as the game finished 2-0 to HIS.

In a hard fought contest against DBGS, the boys managed to secure a 5-4 win, when Rakan came onto the court and took the boys from 4-0 down, to a 5-4 victory! Their next group game, proved too much for them to handle, as they suffered a 12-0 loss to a very talented EABIS, who went on to finish either 3rd/4th. In their final group game, the boys started slowly, but eventually got better throughout the game. Scholars proved to be too strong in the end, as the boys suffered a 7-3 defeat, despite working extremely hard in the final minutes of the game. This meant that the boys finished 5th in their group, and were playing for 9th/10th place today.

It was clear in their play off match, that they were by far the stronger team, and rightfully deserved to beat JPGS 8-2. Whilst the boys were disappointed with their day, a lot can be learned from their performances. It was not a lack of trying that let them down today. BUT, onwards and upwards! I have no doubt, they will channel their frustrations into the football tomorrow!

Girls Football- 2nd

We almost did it! Our girls came so close, to not only going the entire academic year undefeated, but also not concede a single goal! Unfortunately, three back to back play off matches (including extra time and penalties in the semi-finals), took it out of our girls, as they suffered a 1-0 loss in the final!

It has to be said, that the overall standard of girls football this year, was extremely good- and our girls were most certainly one of the best there!

Throughout the group stages, the girls won four and drew two matches. Their first game against SCS, started at a quick pace, and the ball never entered our half. We eventually scored, to win the game 1-0. But it could have been so many more- we'll put it down to nerves!

Our next game was against DBS, where the girls took a very comfortable 4-0 win. Joud scoring 2, Erin 1 and Filippa adding 1 as well! Two wins from two- things were looking good! The third group game proved to be a little tougher, as we only managed a 1-0 win over HIS- but a win is a win! We then drew two consecutive games 0-0. It is always hard to score against a team, who park 6 players in their own half to do nothing but defend. It meant our girls could not find a way through to score, despite their best efforts against DBGS. Our second draw, was against EABIS- the team who eventually beat us in the final! It was a close game, and to be completely honest, both teams were well matched, in terms of effort, work rate and ability. So a draw against them wasn't such a bad result!

The girls had one more group game to go, against SIA. They finished on a high, as they took a very comfortable 3-0 win! On to the quarter finals we went!

We faced SES, who proved to be little competition for our girls. 90% of the game was played in their half, and the girls were relentless trying to find the back of the net. Eventually the first goal came, and then very quickly the second! 2-0, saw us through to the semi finals against Horizon! The one team we always dread playing!

It was a closely fought contest, as they played better in the opening minutes of the semi-final, but we had the better finish. Both teams had chances, but neither could score. After 10 minutes, we then had to play another 5 minutes of extra time. Again, neither team could score the 1 goal needed! So it came down to a penalty shoot out, a cruel way for any team to go out of the competition. Horizon were first....Isabella saves! Erin steps up....scores! Horizon step up....Isabella saves. Filippa steps up....clipped the post. Horizon step up....Isabella saves it. Nunu steps up (knowing her goal would win us the shoot out)....SCORES! Through to the final we go.

It was an outstanding effort from all 11 girls today! They were so unfortunate not to win in the end, but to play 17 matches, win 14, draw 2 and only lose 1, is a pretty impressive season in my book...especially when only one goal was conceded the whole season! A huge well done to all of the girls- they have worked incredibly hard and thoroughlly deserve their silverware!

Mixed Swimming-2nd

The day finished on an absolute high, courtesy of our 10 superstar swimmers! Out of the 14 schools, we secured the most gold medals (6), as well as the second highest medal count of any schools (11).

Hamza was immense in the water! Winning individual gold in the 100m freestyle, 100m IM and 25m Butterfly. He was also part of the three hugely successful boys relay teams, where he picked up two silvers and a fourth gold! The boys relay teams (made up of Jason, Tristan, Hamza, Sam and Rakan), managed a first in the 4x25m medley relay, and second in both the 4x50m and 4x25m freestyle relays- incredible swims from all of the boys! Jason also added an individual gold medal in the 25m breastroke! A superb afternoon of swimming by all five boys, as each of them walked away with at least one medal around their neck!

The boys were really well supported by the girls though, who also had a great afternoon of swimming. It was Orla who lead the way, as she claimed individual gold in both the 25m and 50m breastroke! She (alongside, Ella, Natalie and Filippa), also managed to secure a silver in the girls 4x25m medley relay! The 4x25m and 4x50m freestyle relay teams (comprising of Isabella, Natalie, Ella and Filippa) also added silver and bronze to our medal tally.

It is difficult to confirm what other results were achieved, but certainly from my stopwatch, numerous 4th and 5th places were also earned! Overall, I would say we have almost certainly secured a place in the top 5. It really was an excellent way to end the day, and I wish to take this opportunity to extend my thanks and gratitude to Ms Chal and Ms Grace, for the hours of hard work they have put in to get the team to the standard that they are at. Well done to the swimmers and their fantastic coaches!

Boys Football-9th

Once again, not the day the boys wanted, but sometimes things don't go your way.

During the group stages, they managed to draw 0-0 with the eventual winners Horizon, win against SBS, lose to EABIS, draw 1-1 with JPGS and lost their final group game to DBS. These results meant that they boys finished 5th overall in their group- history had repeated itself as they had to play for 9th/10th once again. To say they were gutted, would be a gross understatement. But, they picked themselves up, and managed to win their final game, to claim 9th place over all. They worked hard all day, and should be credited for not giving up even when things got tough! Well done, boys! We are still really proud of you.

Girls Netball-3rd

Definitely not the result anyone wanted, but on the day, it was what we deserved. One mistake too many from our superstar netballers, meant we narrowly missed out on making the finals. But what an incredible season these girls have had, particularly when we consider it is a brand new team- only 3 returned from last year!

During the group stages, nerves and pure desire to win, meant the girls made too many unforced errors. Had these errors been ironed out, perhaps things would have been different- because our girls can definitely compete with the best! Three wins and three draws (baring in mind they went into half time leading all three games they drew), saw them through the quarter finals. Morale was a little low, but the girls bounced back and won 12-2 against HIS, to move on to the semi finals. Here, they faced Horizon (they had drawn with them earlier in the day, as we were in the same group). Up until this point, the girls were still completely undefeated this season, but the occasion got to them, as they lost 6-4. But credit to the girls, they came fighting back in their last match of the day, to beat DBS 6-4 and bring that trophy home! Not bad, for a squad of girls who are mostly new to the sport. Over 200 goals scored, only 40 conceded over 14 matches- only 1 lost!! Well done, girls! Amazing job.

ISACK U13 Girls Volleyball; Semi-final

TES 2 v 0 BSK

Well they won again, meaning that this academic year, our U13 girls have finished in the Top 2 in every single ISACK event- what an outstanding year they have had!

The first set started off really well, as we took a very quick 4-0 lead thanks to melanie-’s consistently excellent serving. Each time, however, BSK did manage to receive the serve, but unable to put it back over the net- so the girls knew they had to anticipate it coming back at any moment! BSK played well at times, but our girls looked the sharper, and our serving was consistently excellent throughout the entire first set! What was most noticeable during today’s match, was that we were using three touches much more, and predominantly the set- something we have been working on all season. Communication was better, and the girls looked and sound much more confident. We eventually won the first set 25-11, and looked certain to take the second.

As we moved into the second set, however, mistakes started to creep in. Mainly, a distinct lack of communication once again, which meant the girls were out of position, and banging into each other, unsure of who was going to hit the ball. It looked messy, and provided BSK the opportunity to claw themselves back into the match, and potentially force a third set. The game was tied at 16-16 all, before TES woke up and played better. Setting was once again impressive, and serving was consistent and very powerful today. We moved ahead to 20-16, before we lost serve again. For our final five points, it honestly looked as though BSK would take the second set, as the girls looked scared and unsure of what to do. Fortunately, one or two brilliant shots at the net from Thalia and Aubrey, meant that we stayed in front. Nourhans serving, pulled us to 22-19, and with only 3 points needed, BSK managed to turn the serve over again, pulling the score closer to 23-20. Thalia- with an impressive smash- managed to win back the serve, as the score stood at 24-20. It went to Aubrey to serve us our final points, and ensure we were through to the final. It was a brilliant serve, which BSK could not return! 25-20 the final score- we were through to the final!

A third and friendly set then ensued, and it was fantastic to see Nadine, Alice, Lara, Salma (with one arm) and Olivia take to the court, as they dominated to win 20-6 after some incredible serving.

We take on NES next Monday in the final! Hopefully the girls confidence will continue into one final match!

KFSAC Year 3/4 Boys Football Tournament

The boys put a lot of effort into the opening day of the KFSAC boys 3/4 football tournament and ended the day with mixed results. The opening game against KAS resulted in a draw, however, TES really should have won the fixture based on their possession. TES looked to drive forward with the ball and were brought down with a couple of cynical tackles that stopped both Noah and Andrew from having shots on goal. In the opening minutes of the match, KAS played a through ball that goalkeeper Hibo came out to clear, unfortunately, his kick deflected off the KAS striker and he rolled the ball into the empty net to give KAS a 1-0 lead. The boys battled and worked extremely hard, passing the ball wide to advance the ball forward and taking shots that were either blocked or deflected by KAS defenders. The breakthrough came for TES when Iosif played the ball wide and Noah’s cross/shot went across the face of the goal and deflected in off a KAS defender to make the score 1-1. TES then took the lead when we had a free kick on the edge of the box that Noah smashed past the opposition keeper. Jos and Wessell made good interceptions and tackles when required and in the final seconds of the game Wessell made a good interception and cleared the ball off the side of the pitch. We lacked focus from the resulting roll-in and KAS found themselves in on goal for another simple finish to level the game at 2-2. All our hard work undone in 10 seconds of sloppy play. Adam and Shaheen came into the starting lineup for the second match against KNES which we found much more difficult. We came up against a very good side that clearly had players that played competitively regularly. For much of the game, we were forced into making lots of defensive challenges and spent most of the match in our own half. The opening goal actually came for KNES when we were having our best spell of the game, we passed the ball sideways across the pitch and conceded possession when KNES counterattacked and beat Hibo in a one-on-one. The second goal came easy for KNES when the TES defence had a lapse of concentration and left the best player of the tournament unmarked and he doubled their lead. Zade and Euan both came onto the pitch and made good defensive challenges and tried to pass the ball wide, when in possession. Despite the positive impact of the substitutes, KNES wrapped the win up with another good finish from a short corner play. In the final game of the day the boys completely dominated ABS from start to finish and could have easily scored 5 goals in the game. Hibo, Wessell and Adam had very little to do in defence whilst the midfield and attack of Noah, Iosif and Jos controlled the game. Iosif scored the first goal with a great solo run from his own half which he then buried a shot into the far post from 10 yards out. Zade, Euan, Shaheen and Andrew all came into the game and the boys continued to dominate. Noah, Jos, Andrew and Shaheen all went close to doubling the TES lead but a series of saves and blocks prevented them. Iosif added a second goal of the game when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box and he powered home another strike into the bottom left corner.

Day 2 of the tournament started with a very unfortunate 1-1 draw for the boys. We pushed DBS back from the very start of the game, controlling possession and territory. For the opening minutes DBS defended on the edge of their own box and barely had any touches off the ball. With the first attack of the game DBS counterattacked and managed to squeeze a ball past Hibo to take the lead. The TES boys continued to push forward and got a goal when Iosif hit a well placed shot past the goalkeeper after some good play by Andrew and Noah out wide. The boys pushed forward looking for the winning goal but ran out of time in the game. In the final group game the TES boys faced the group leaders NES and gave it a real good go of getting through the group. The boys battled and pressurised a very talented NES team and nullified their superior individual skills with grit and determined team play. Noah and Iosif were kept busy working up and down in midfield, whilst Shaheen tirelessly ran upfront and nearly broke through on goal a number of times. Jos and Wessel were superb in defence, making vital interceptions and tackles at the right time. Zade and Andrew came off the bench during the match and added extra energy and effort to the performance. NES created a number of shots from close range, which were blocked well by a rugged TES defence and we also had efforts on goal to score, however the score remained 0-0 at full-time, meaning we had finished 3rd in the group and would have to play a 5th place playoff against BSK. TES looked confident in the match and put in another fine performance to win 5th place overall. Shaheen had a very impressive game up front, closing down well and winning possession and also running at the BSK defence when he had the ball. He went very close to scoring, when he beat a defender before striking the ball onto the post. Iosif and Noah ran tirelessly in midfield once again and it was a combination of closing down and tackling from the front three which resulted in another goal for Iosif when he smashed the ball past the BSK keeper. The game finished 1-0 and the TES boys had performed better in each match they played. Well done to Andrew, Shaheen, Noah, Iosif, Jos, Zade, Wessel, Euan, Adam and Hibo!
